Pros: JD name. Easy to mow with-control wise. Is an Automatic.
Cons: JD quality shoddy on this one. Tires. Battery. Steering breakdowns. Broken Belts
I'm a third generation john deere owner. All the JD tractors my grandfather owned before me, and my dad's growing up worked forever without any troubles. JD lawnmowers seemed to be supreme. I've enjoyed them and have had experience running them my whole life.
Well....I got the LT155 (15HP) after getting married as my first mower...and i must say it has been a headache ever since i got it. Have had it 7 years now.
The good thing is at least, I am trading it in, for another JD, an X300 , which i was told will be much better. I'll write up a review later after i get it and have used it enough to talk about it. Still, it should've lasted far longer than 7 years...i mean, my dad still has his same old JD and now i'm heading into my second!! Sheesh. (edit: and my yard is only an acre, a woodsy typical acre for the area I live in-no big hills or slopes or anything out of the ordinary. Mostly flat-open grass with woods around at all the edges.)
Anyway, back to the LT155....I saw other reviews either loving this tractor or hating it. One specific review i read that was negative sounded like ALL THE EXACT SAME problems I had...so that made me feel better at least, and letted me know it wasn't just me. I mean, I am honestly VERY careful with EVERYTHING that i own, my wife can attest to that. I keep my stuff up and routinely do anything needed to keep something in good repair.
First problem...BATTERY died over and over...couldn't stay charged...our local JD never did figure that out. Went thru battery's like gas. Can't be buying those monthly, which would help for awhile but didn't help for long. I can't tell you how annoying it is to have to charge your new battery up with a charger for nearly 30 minutes everytime before you want to mow. The past 7 years with this thing has been a royal pain. The JD staff would come out after i first got it and seemed stumped and would "try to be helpful"-looked it over, gave me a new battery a few times, but the problem just continued on past my warrenty time, and nothing ever was resolved or figured out with it. (note: another reviewer with this same problem said they eventually got a new part installed that fixed this charging problem, and under warrenty too at their JD shop, according to them.)
TIRES!!!! These tires were SO bad....went flat all the time...pin-prick sized holes, nothing but trouble...went thru so many cans of fix-a-flat in the past years i can't count. Nothing they could do about these tires...except for me to BUY new ones. Arghy. As-if. (I've heard that the company that made this tractor's tires went out of business, back, long ago. Don't know if this is true, but what i was told.)
Starting troubles. (fairly-sometimes the problem was related to the battery problems, other times it was just troublesome in general to start for whatever other reasons.)
Steering broke down just lately. Teeth ground down. JD Mechanic looked at it just the other day and i was told it'd cost $300 to fix, he seemed surprised it happened. "Completely worn down" he kind of muttered and shook his head like he was amazed and mystified. This was the last straw for me and i wasnt' gonna sink $300 into my constant headache. I don't mind fixing it if this was the first thing or so, but i can't write fully or portray fairly all the hassles this has been and how much i've NOT enjoyed it and wanted a new one. JD picked my LT up and i won't be seeing it again.
This tractor was either a bad model or a total LEMON. Although, the dealer said that lots of people really like this model, but there are stray reports of "odd" problems with it here and there.
JD in my area was helpful per say, but should've done MORE in my opinion too. After all the problems and headaches i've had to constantly endure with the LT155, I feel like JD owes me a free tractor for life now! I wish.
Now hoping my new one, X300 will be better...debated seriously about switching to Cub Cadet, so mad with this past one, but decided on the higher up, more durable and brand new JD X300...hope that goes better. I get it delivered this next tuesday. If this next one is just as bad, JD quality must've went down the toilet. Again, my family has had JD's for years and they've always been supreme with no problems, until this LT155 I had and just finally got rid of! I've got high hopes for my new mower. I'll write a review for the X300 once i've had it a month or two...i hope.
