Pros: Best of the medium priced tractor available
Cons: Make front bumper standard, Put gas filler on left rear fender.
I bought the L-120 after having a terrible time with a Sears Craftsman model 270771. I decided this time I would buy from the dealer and see if I had better luck. This tractor has exceeded my expectations with no problems after 75 hours of use.
The specifications on the L-120 are as follow:
Engine-20 HP Briggs and Stratton Overhead Valve Intek
Transmission-Automatic with two pedal foot control
Forward Speed- 0-5.8 MPH
Reverse Speed- 0-2.9 MPH
Cruise Control-Standard equipment
Mower Deck Size is 48"
Cutting Height- 1-4 inches
Mulch cover is standard equipment
Fuel tank capacity-2.1 gallon
Tire size front-16"
Tire size back-22"
Seat Back-Deluxe High back
I am really happy with the performance of the L-120. I have never had a lawn tractor which can handle my 2 and half acres without something breaking every season at least once. In the first 75 hours of use this tractor has had zero problems. My yard is a old pasture with several pretty good ruts from the moles and the larger tires on this just floats over the bumps.
The performance of the deck 48" deck and the 20 HP intek engine has never bogged down even in the thickest 6 inch grass this past spring. I did buy the optional 6.5 bushel grass bagger as to use to pick up leaves in the fall and the only thing I did not like is the fact the exhaust from the engine goes straight out and blows leaves all over the place. I solved the problem by getting a spark arrester muffler from John Deere and it solved the leaf blowing by disfusing the exhaust.
The comfort factor on this tractor impressed me in the fact that I am 6'5" tall and no lawn tractor before this one was very comfortable, The biggest problem with most lawn tractors is the fact that the seat does not go back far enogh for any comfort. The John Deere seat all the way back provided the best comfort of any tractor that I have ever owned. I still have a Murray garden tractor that is 20 years old and the difference is night and day in the comfort factor.
Now for some of the minor things I do not much care about, all these items are minor but still annoying
I wish John Deere would include the front bumper as standard equipment instead of being a option. I feel a lawn tractor without a bumper with the plastic hood makes the hood a target for damage. I have purchased the bumper and installed it to prevent damage after I almost try to kill a fence post. The second thing is the fact the gas filler is under the seat and it has a rather small opening, I think the gas filler should be on the left rear fender so it is easily accessible and you get less dripping from your gas can.
I am also highly impressed by the fact the standard blades are as cheap as they are and durable. To me this shows that John Deere spent time making sure the machine will stand up the weekly job of mowing the grass.
This is the best lawn tractor available in the medium price range available from the John Deere dealers or Home Depot. Service is available at the John Deere dealers and the dealer nearest my home is excellent in answering all my questions and the follow up post sales. I did buy from the dealer because of my problems getting Sears when I had my old Lawn tractor helping me when the warranty expired.
For the past 3 seasons of mowing from March thru November and with 280 hours, This mower has taken the abuse that I dished at it, mowing wet grass and in even in very dry condtions the mower always made my yard look good.
The repairs to this mower has been uneventful, I broke a spindle in the 3rd year of ownership, big rocks and spindles do not mix well and going into the 4th year that has been the only thing to break, I did notice that the right front anti scrape wheel needs to be replaced and thats it for repairs.
This mower still has great power and has been super reliable and still is mowing the 2 and half acres that it has been doing since I first took home to my property, The only issue that the mower had since new was to have the hood replaced under warranty in 2nd season when a rib nut broke on it.
The deck now has minor surface rust and a few little dents but with more then half my neighbors now using this series of lawn tractors it is evidence of JOhn Deere making a great lawn tractor and one that is durable also.
