Pros: Smooth for v-twin diesel, powerful.
Cons: PTO drops out when reversing
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this tractor. It is fuel efficient and easy to use.

| ccsial's Full Review: John Deere Lawn Tractor |
I mow about five acres. Most of it is mowed with a Ford 1920 and a 72 inch mower. There are a number of areas that are too tight and small for the big Ford. I wanted another diesel since I like diesels and have fuel on my property. I needed a small diesel with a 48 inch mower. The 355D was just what I needed. The Yanmar diesel is new so I hope it is reliable. Yanmar has a good reputation and so does John Deere so I took the gamble. I won't know about reliability for some years I expect. The V-twin is rubber mounted and is as smooth as the gas Honda riding 38 inch tractor that I traded. It vibrates a bit at idle but at half throttle or up it settles down nicely. Not too loud either. I also ordered a snow blade for it. I want to use it for light snows where the Ford and blower are an overkill. I like everything about this tractor except the PTO switch. When you hit the reverse peddle the PTO stops unless you pull out on the PTO switch. This seems dumb. Once you get into the habit it will provide no safety. The first thing I learned in pilot training is that habits can be deadly. There is no alternative for thinking. I quickly figured out which wires to short to overcome this drawback. I only have 10 hours so far but it is a joy to use. I finally filled the tank after nine hours.
