| STLambert's Full Review: John Deere Lawn Tractor |
We recently purchased a new home on a 1 acre lot. I knew I would want a lawn tractor. I began a rather intensive process of research which ranged from Wal-Mart and Home Depot to Deere, Simplicity, Cub Cadet and Toro.
I came into the experience with a bias toward John Deere because of my outstanding results with the John Deere JX75 push mower I own. This has been one of the most satisfying pieces of equipment I've ever had the pleasure of using- in every sense of the word.
But I also was wary of Deere's price premium- despite their reputation for outstanding performance and quality. My initial interest was in a Deere LT155, which ranged from a few hundred to nearly double the price of the least expensive lawn tractors by Murray or MTD. The Deere was rated highest by the leading Consumers' magazine for reliability- a big plus. And I really, really liked the two-pedal hydrostatic transmission- very convenient.
What I didn't like was the unibody construction and the relatively light weight of the LT. The LX255 was very appealing with its heavier frame, electric PTO, heavier bearings, flywheel, regulated electrical system, cruise control and more comfortable seating- but I was put off by the $1000+ price jump over the LT155.
The more I compared the more I became convinced that over time, the Deere would be the most satisfying lawn tractor to own- but could I justify the price. Then Deere offered their spring incentive: $400 off on the LT255 and no interest for 90 days! My local dealer knocked off another $100 and suddenly the price difference over the LT155 was only $500.
In the end, after hours of discussion, my wife convinced me. Here logic? Look- the Deere you want is the most comfortable, well-built tractor you've tried- and the easiest to operate. It also has the best history in terms of repair and the highest resale value.
Now the least expensive tractor you might purchase is around $1800 for a Sabre or Scotts- compared to the $3000 for the Deere you really want- that's $1200 over a 12 to 15 year product life. Isn't it really worth an extra $75 or $100 a year to go out and use the mower you really want each week?
Who could argue with THAT logic!?!?
So... we bought the LT255 and haven't regretted the decision. It's what we wanted in the first place and hasn't disappointed. I never think about the "other $1200"... but I never fail to walk past it in the garage or start it up on a Saturday without a sense of pride and satisfaction at owning such a fine piece of equipment. For us, the LX255 is a pleasure to own.
