Pros: Scent, adds shimmer, can be used on wet or dry hair.
Cons: Strong scent could be offensive; Could look out of place (see review).
A couple of years ago, while browsing around the hair care aisle, I decided to try John Frieda's Beach Blonde Gold Rush Shimmer Gel. The wide gold tube with gold shimmer flecks looked interesting and I thought, "Why not?"
Beach Blonde Gold Rush Shimmer Gel comes in a 4 oz. wide tube with clear top. Be assured when you look at the gold color on the outside, that it is exactly what color it is on the inside as well.
The outside of the tube claims Beach Blonde Gold Rush Shimmer Gel to:
Accent all hair with streaks of sparkling, iridescent gold...or, smooth hair back into sleek, shimmery wet-look chic...for sexy, summer hair...year round
"Paint" on random rays of sparkling "blonde" with this gold-hued shimmering gel. Or, sleek damp hair into riveting Riviera chic. Glimmery-gold gel dries to a wet-look finish with remarkable sparkle. Perfect for blondes and all shades of hair. For extra-sexy summer shimmer, rub a few drops of product on shoulders, knees....or anywhere you want to a golden girl glow. For instant blonde streaks: Apply to dried hair. Put a few drops of product of your fingers, and "pull" through selected surface strands, distribution evenly from roots to ends. For sleeked back chic: Apply to wet hair. Take a quarter-size amount of gel in hands, rub hands together and smooth or comb hair into desired style. Let gel dry naturally (or blow dry using a diffuser)

What It's Like
When you squeeze a small amount into the palm of your hand, you will notice that the consistency is very thick and bright gold. It has a strong "island/beachy" scent, like coconut or pina-colada, I am not sure which. The scent is quite strong and can get old after awhile. I don't use this product daily, so it doesn't bother me.
You can apply it on wet or dry hair and I have done both. If applied on wet hair, the thick consistency will hold your hair in the desired style and keeping it looking wet. I find when applied on wet hair, it looked best if I "scrunched" it. If I played around with it too much and it dried, I had to wash my hair and start all over again.
If applied on dry hair, you can smooth it through to downplay frizzies and it adds shimmer also. Application on dry hair worked best for me.
John Frieda Beach Blonde Gold Rush Shimmer Gel has color to it and that will come into play as well. When I first used it, I had platinum-colored hair and the gel was VERY noticeable, almost as though I had a funky color job. Now my hair is a little bit darker (a dark blonde) and the color is still noticeable, but not nearly as much.
Also, This product is sticky. Really sticky. If you get it on your skin, it's best to wash it off. This includes your hands which, even after they are washed, will have a little sparkle on them as well.
This product also claims you can use it on skin. I would advise against it. Before going to a party last summer, I rubbed a small amount over my shoulders and neck. All night, I sat uncomfortable due to the stickiness.
You may be wondering, after all of the "sticky" talk, why I would even bother to continue to use it. I'll tell you.
I like to use this product during the summer (partly due to the "beachy" scent) and apply it on dry hair. If you use a small amount (start with less than you think; you can always add more!) and rub together on hands before lightly running your hands over your hair, it does a beautiful job of adding subtle, gold shimmery highlights that are played up in the sun. It makes my hair shimmer and sparkle in the sun and I have gotten compliments on the scent, as well as how shiny my hair is.
My advice is to buy this product (around $6 at drugstores) and experiment a little. For those who like the "wet" look, this product would be great, as it adds shimmer and when dried, holds the "wet" look for hours. If you like funky hair colors, apply slightly more to desired areas and watch your hair stand out in a crowd! If you are looking for a more subdued look, try applying it on dry hair, lightly running your fingers over the top of your finished style.
