| redhotspicy's Full Review: John Frieda Sheer Blonde Spotlight High Beam Gloss... |
Ok, ladies (and gentlemen) of Epinions, I'm going to go out on a limb here and declare that John Frieda Sheer Blonde Spotlight High Beam Glosser & Power Detangler is by far THE best drugstore hair-care product I know of. Yes, that's right... the best.
What Is Spotlight?
Spotlight is a product made by John Frieda. It's part of the Sheer Blonde line, but fear not if you are a brunette like me. It's perfectly acceptable to use this on non-blonde hair. Spotlight is intended for shine and detangling, and wow does it work!
What John Frieda says:
"Illuminates blonde with a crystal-clear layer of shimmery shine."
"Ultra-light formula leaves wet hair sleek, snag-free, easy to comb."
"Gives a high-gloss, high-glam finish to dried hair."
Why Do You Need It?
My hair is fine, wavy, and long. I struggle with tangles, but also battle limp hair. My ideal products are moisturizing, detangling, and light. I have a hard time combing my hair out even after deep-conditioning, but I hesitate to use heavy leave-ins in concern of the extra weight. I love the look of super-shiny, healthy hair, so a bit of extra shine can't hurt. Needless to say, discovering Spotlight was a major breakthrough for my hair!
Packaging, Price, Purchasing?
Spotlight , part of the Sheer Blonde line, currently seems to be undergoing some changes in packaging. I replaced my tube a few weeks ago, and Walmart had both the old familiar tube, and a different one - but both were Spotlight! Anyhow, the usual Spotlight tube is shiny champagne plastic, with a clear screw-on cap. Each tibe contains 2.4 ounces of product and retails for around $6. I seem to have the best luck finding it at either CVS drugstore or Walmart.
Scent? Appearance?
Spotlight's scent is light and unobtrusive, and to me it smells just a tad like Pantene products. Once I apply the product I cannot smell it at all for the rest of the day. Spotlight is a clear, lightweight gel-type product. It's not sticky in the least, nor is it greasy like a serum. The texture is unique.
Ingredients?
Propylene Glycol, Cyclomethicone, Water, Phenyl Trimethicone, Hexylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Polyacrylamide, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Laureth-7, Octyl Methoxycinnamate Sunscreen, Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile, Phenoxyethanol.
How To Use?
How you use Spotlight determines your personal success with it. The directions on the tube state:
"To smooth, gloss and detangle wet hair: For instant, easy comb-thru plus a sleek, glossy finish apply directly to soaking wet hair after shampooing. Dispense a dime-size amount of product into palms, and smooth evenly through wet hair, concentrating on ends. Do not rinse out. Blow-dry, or style as usual.
To smooth, gloss and luminize hair that is already dried: Rub a drop or two of product into palms, and smooth hands over surface of dry hair, to eliminate frizz, frays and flyaways. Hair instantly appears sleek, shimmery, smooth as glass.
Use more or less product, depending on length and thickness of hair."
For me, here is how Spotlight works best: I keep my tube of Spotlight in the shower, right along with my shampoo and conditioner. Right before I get out of the shower, I gently squeeze the excess water from my hair, and dispense some Spotlight - slightly more than dime-sized for my long hair. I rub it between my hands and begin working it through my hair, starting at the ends, so it concentrates on that area. I avoid applying any to the roots though, because I don't like a lot of shine there (it looks greasy!). Then I can move on to combing out my hair.
I then proceed to use all my other styling products. Once a week I use Redken Anti-Snap, in which case I wait to apply the Spotlight after the Anti-Snap. However you choose to apply this, you will probably find it works best on very damp hair.
Results?
Wow! Combing out my hair is easier than ever after I use Spotlight! My wide-tooth comb slides effortlessly through the tangles, and in a matter of seconds I'm finished. Couldn't be any easier!
Blowdrying is easier, too. Sometimes I like to straighten out the wave by blowdrying with a round brush. The brush glides beautifully and never snags or pulls.
The really impressive part of using Spotlight? The shine! WOW! My hair is absolutely gleaming and shimmering with gorgeous, healthy looking shine. Some shine products are just too much on my fine hair and leave it looking oily, dirty, or limp. Using Spotlight on wet hair produces this truly lovely looking shine that gets a lot of compliments. Any frizz I ever had is totally gone, too. Even those tiny little hairs on top of my head are smoothed down and invisible.
I've actually never used Spotlight on dried hair, as I have a finishing product that works well for me, so I can't comment on how the effectiveness on dry hair.
Recommendation?
Well heck yeah! Spotlight is a terrific drugstore find. It even multi-tasks, detangling and glossing at the same time. Fine hair can use this on wet hair without worry of looking limp. I say, give it a shot if you want easier detangling and lots of shine - it's only $6!
Thanks for reading, and have a great New Year!
