Pros: Terrific pizza in an old NY atmosphere with jukeboxes
Cons: You may have to wait; menu pretty limited
The Bottom Line: Go for the thin-crusted, wood oven pizzas, which are the highlight here. If prime time, be prepared to wait.

| zeecee's Full Review: John's Pizzeria |
If the line sprawls out onto Bleecker Street, you may not want to wait, but they do move you along and once you're inside, you feel you're part of the old, New York experience. You expect Frank Sinatra to sing from the jukebox. The wood floors, booths, paneling and waiters add to the sense that this has been around for a long time - and for good reason. John's is famous, and this is the original place.
The pizza menu is long, offering all sorts of combinations, but the other menu items aren't quite so exciting. There's a very ordinary spaghetti (they don't call is pasta here) and meatballs, sandwiches and a salad that doesn't do anything for me. We're talking thin crust pizzas with a tangy sauce. The cheese isn't gloppy; you might miss those overly cheesy pizzas we're used to. Cokes taste the way you want them to, but there are limited choice of beverages, whether you're looking at beer or wine. Prices are sane.
There was a time when John's was the only place for this sort of pizza from a wood burning oven, but that's no longer true. Even so, John's is still special, and a fun place to go. The waiters are friendly and service is quick. Unlike most NY pizzerias, you can't get it by the slice; it's whole pies here.
