Pros: the best thin crust pizza in NYC baked with real fire!
Cons: can't get in between 7-11 pm w/out a wait. But line chat is fun sometimes.
The Bottom Line: Mostly 4 tops and booths so larger parties will wait a long time.
Go off peak and go hungry.
Tourists and locals intermingle for a great meal.

The quintessential village pizza parlor, down to the pictures of Neil Armstrong moonwalking and President Kennedy's portrait.
There used to be only the one dining room, then there were 2, then 3, now they're back to 2. Try to get a booth in the old dining room for the full flavor of John's. They're well carved with decades of graffitti loving pizza gobblers.
This is thin crusted pizza at its best. It will be baked in a true fire oven (you can watch the glow in the open kitchen) with a dark and sometimes burned at the edges crust and dressed with minimum of tomato sauce that is more marinara than sweet . Unless you order the white pizzas that have no tomato sauce.
They use top quality sliced mozzarella cheese and you can choose from dozens of toppings. I always go with mushrooms and sausage. No sliced pre-boiled weiner type sausages here or canned soggy mushrooms. Fresh crumbled savory sausage meat and thinly sliced raw mushrooms are modestly scattered across your pie. Choose the small 6 piece or larger 8 piece pie, a pitcher of beer and some old friends and you'll be set for a delightful experience.
Forget about the other food items on the menu. The salad is uninspired but does have the aforementioned raw mushrooms on it. The pasta dishes are way too overcooked for this al-dente lover. The calzones are too much dough, too much cheese, not enough flavor. You've got to get that well done pizza crust for the full experience.
