John's Pizzeria, (278 Bleeker Street between 6th and 7th Avenues) has got to be the best pizza in New York City, if not the world! The restaurant has a 1950's pizza parlour feel, with a large mural of the bay of Naples painted over the old wooden high backed booths in the main room. The booths have decades of names carved in them from patrons. It's cozy and very busy at the same time. At times there is a line to get in...so best to try to get there early just before dinner, or later in the evening after the dinner rush has ended. (But if there is a line it is WELL worth the short wait - the longest I've ever waited for a table was 15 minutes). There is a second quieter room, know as the Woody Allen room, with movie stills from many of Woody's films. But I prefer to sit in the front (main) room and watch the comings and goings. One night while eating, I saw Matthew Broderick squeeze past the line to pick up a pie he had ordered.
To describe the pizza, it is simply heaven. As I'm writing this I'm salivating, and thinking that I'm well over due for a visit. John's was one (if not the first) place to use brick ovens. The ovens give the thin delicate crust a crispness and subtle charcoal flavor that you can't get at a standard pizza place. And there are many great, fresh toppings that you can add. (The menu is tacked to the wall in each booth). I recommend the fresh garlic, and mushroom myself. They also have other Italian specialities such as lasagna, ziti, shells and such.
It's great for the family, or on a date. They also have an old chrome juke box from the 50's that you can play some tunes on while you wait.
As I said, Johns has the best pizza. Period!
