| monkeyhoot's Full Review: John's Pizzeria |
We just wanted something without goat cheese or peach and currant chutney - and something that wasn't presented to us. This is food, not art!
My husband and I honeymooned in New York at the Four Seasons. I will never be able to afford it again and am so glad we stayed fewer days and really lived it up!
We got a very nice wedding gift from my husband's folks and we spent most of it getting out of substantial debt (see my epinion about credit card debt) but also wanted a honeymoon so we used part of it to splurge in New York. And splurge we did.
I will write about the Four Seasons elsewhere, but let me just say that the service there is impeccable. These people really know what they are doing. So, when the concierge at the Four Seasons recommended John's Pizza, we knew it had to be good.
We told her that we just wanted something normal, substantial and good. John's was the first suggestion out of her mouth and she arranged for a Taxi to pick us up out front.
If anything can be called a joint, it's John's. They even had the red and white checkered tablecloths! It was dark but clean and very low key. A few celebrity photographs hung on the wall, but it was a very unpretentious place.
The service was great but we were early for dinner by New York standards (5:30 p.m.) and no one else was in the place. We ordered cheese and pepperoni and that's what we got. No goat cheese, no sprinkled anything. Just a pizza. And, it was delicious.
It cost about what you'd expect a pizza to cost - around $20. And, it was worth every penny. John's uses a brick oven to cook the pizza so the thin crust comes out crispy except around the edges where it remains a little doughy. Perfect! The sauce was delicious - fresh, thick and spiced up just a bit with basil and garlic but not too much. Plus, they use quality cheeses which makes all the difference. Real mozzarella, asagio, and parmesan.
My husband is a Pizzeria Regina fan so he felt like this wasn't the BEST pizza he'd ever had, but it was close. I thought it was great and really liked the ambiance of the place. Not over done Italian but just enough touches to make it authentic (is that Joe Pesci over there? - Do I make you laugh? Am I some sort of a clown?).
And, we did note that you could get a goat cheese pizza if you wanted it! We did NOT want it.
The Four Seasons concierge was right on (man was she good at her job!)and our night at John's was worth the long Taxi ride to get there (the Taxi cost more than the pizza!).
Food:
Everything from plain cheese pizza, pepperoni, sausage to goat cheese pizza.
Service:
Very good.
Decor:
Dark, cozy, Italian but not "chain Italian".
Food: Everything from plain cheese pizza, pepperoni, sausage to goat cheese pizza.
John's also offers other Italian specialties like ziti, ravioli, spaghetti but I wasn't paying much attention to other menu items - I had my eye on the pie!
Order pitchers of beer or soft drinks to wash it down.
Service: Very good.
Decor: Dark, cozy, Italian but not "chain Italian".
