| Profilewriter's Full Review: John's Pizzeria |
When a new supermarket, heavy on take-out food, opened in the NJ town near where I live, the manager bragged to me about the pizza.
Yuck! The stuff was about half a foot high; a catacomb topped with strange combinations like creamed chicken and spinach. Not a pretty sight.
The guy was new in the area; obviously not from a part of the country that takes pizza seriously. His slices, leaden and overwhelming, were like Pizza Hut on steroids.
Trying to explain to him what real pizza, New York pizza, looks like, I told him about John's. Now, I don't want to get into the whole "John's is better; no Ray's is better thing." I think they're both fine. Thin, topped with tomato sauce -- but not too much tomato sauce -- and good quality cheese.
That's it. Okay, maybe pepperoni or sausage or peppers, but nothing fancy. No duck a l'orange topping, please.
In the great NYC pizza competition, I give John's the nod because of its location. The venerable pizzeria is in the West Village, which is the very best part of New York. That I will argue about all night if necessary.
Pizza and strolling go hand in hand in New York. If you're staying in Mid-town, just take the bus down Seventh Avenue. Get off at West 4th Street and walk south, toward the World Trade Center, and turn right on Bleecker Street. After you duck into a few stores, get in line at John's and see what real pizza tastes like.
