jgibson2's Full Review: Johnson & Johnson First Aid Hurt Free Tape 1" X 5 ...
I've had 2 occasions to use this product. Last year, my son had arthroscopic surgery on his knee. Knees are tricky to bandage, and when the leg is hairy, things get trickier. Shaving was not an option, and the surgeon had only shaved the very small area surrounding his very small incisions.
Arthroscopic surgeries on the knee may have small incisions, but those incisions ooze. For days. Frequent dressing changes were needed to keep up with the oozing, and pulling off sticky tape just wasn't an option. The dressings had to be changed 3-4 times a day at first, and he could barely stand for me to touch him.
Fortunately, I discovered Johnson & Johnson First Aid, Hurt-Free Tape. The word "tape" tends to confuse. I generally think of tape as something sticky - and this definitely isn't. That, of course, is why it is "hurt-free". No pulling on sore skin. No disrupting incisions or healing injuries. No pulling hair from very hairy body parts.
You do need a small piece of regular sticky-tape to secure the end, but that small piece doesn't need to touch the skin. There is a tendency of the product to slip when used on the leg, but since my son was either in bed or sitting with his leg propped up, that wasn't an issue for him.
My second experience with hurt-free tape came more recently. My husband lost his footing and scraped off a large area of the skin on his lower leg. Another oozing wound - this one much larger and again the hairy leg problem. No way could I use sticky tape to secure a dressing that needed to be changed twice a day. This one has presented more of a challenge, because he simply will not stay put. He insists on walking, stooping, squatting - all the usual except that I think he will not be kneeling any time soon. The hurt-free tape does have a tendency to slide very slowly down his leg. I tried using a small piece of sticky tape to hold it up, but that simply does not work. He is too active. It would require far too much tape to keep it in place. The dressing doesn't slip enough to expose his injury, though, so it's really not a huge problem.
One other advantage - you can re-use this product until it gets soiled. The knee incisions and leg wound oozed, but the absorbent dressings I used kept that from soiling the hurt-free tape. I was able to re-use it for 2-3 days at 2-4 dressing changes/day. That's quite a saving over conventional tape, even if this is a fairly pricey product. Since only the sterile dressings touch the wound and not the tape, it is safe to re-use it.
The product is hypoallergenic and latex-free. It's a good choice for leg injuries and smaller body parts, but probably not practical if you have an abdominal incision.
