| Freak369's Full Review: Aveeno Johnson & Johnson Surevue |
When it comes to contact lenses I used to be a real snob and would only wear a specific brand. With so many online sites that deal specifically with contact lenses and selected accessories, youd be crazy to ever purchase them at a retail location. Why pay more for your lenses when you can get them at 20 to 50% less online? Thats how I first came across the Surevue line of lenses; they were on sale at a site for $13.99 a box, a price that I simply couldnt pass up. Sure eye care is something that I worry about but I have come to trust the Johnson & Johnson name for high quality products. I figures that even if I only got a weeks worth of wear from them, they would be worth it just to have them around in case I needed a spare or was running low on another brand. Much to my surprise, these lenses were comfortable to wear, easy to put in and take out and cleaned up nicely with a multi purpose solution. Not bad in my opinion but in all honesty, my usual lenses have nothing to fear from these. Theres nothing wrong with them but they just dont seem to have the lasting power that I need from a contact lens.
As I mentioned in almost all of my other eye care and contact lens reviews, I suffer from bad calcium and protein deposits so my lenses need to be able to handle being cleaned often and if possible retard the initial signs of pitting. Since Id used other Johnson & Johnson brands in the past I wasnt worried in the least that Id get an inferior lens or that Id have trouble getting them in or out of my eye but I wondered if they would be able to handle the beach air and hours in front of the computer screen. For the most part these lenses were in the good to great range most of the time but after wearing them for more than twelve hours at a stretch tended to make my eyes dry. Drops did help to relieve the minor irritation from extended wear but after having them in the first few days I knew that there was no way Id be able to sleep in them, even for one night or a long nap. The one time that I did nod off for a few hours my eyes were beet red and I had to remove and soak them for a few hours before I could wear them comfortably.
Product Specifics
These come packed six to a box so you will get at least six weeks worth of wear from each set that you order. Since I have the same prescription in each eye I can get away with ordering one box to try out a lens to see if I like it or not. Some times this isnt practical when you factor in the shipping fees but if I am ordering other lenses and come across a new one or one I havent tried out, I can get away with ordering one box. Johnson & Johnson claims that you can get one to two weeks of wear from these lenses however they arent meant for continuous wear so make sure that you take them out and clean them to extend their life. I use a multi purpose solution to clean and store my lenses and these cleaned up nicely for about ten days, after that they started to feel a little gritty and I knew that it was time to pitch them and break out a new pair. Just like most lenses, these come individually sealed in those cute little plastic pods so you can take them with you when traveling, on the road or as a spare pair in your automobile without having to worry about them being in a non-sterile state.
Price
As I mentioned, I found these for $13.99 a box and simply couldnt pass up getting them. When I checked the various online sites that deal exclusively with contact lenses most were selling these for $17.99 to $20.99 per box of six lenses. Some do require you to purchase two boxes at a time even if you do have the same prescription for each eye. Seeing as how you can get up to two weeks of wear from them, this is a good deal for people who dont wear their lenses every day. When you compare them to other big name lenses they are about the same price so the only real determining factor to purchasing these over others is the amount of wear you can get out of them and the price you are paying for them. If you are new to the Johnson & Johnson line of contacts, stop by their website and fill out the online form to receive a coupon for a free pair of lenses. Just go here: www.acuvue.com/products/surevue.html and click on the side tab to get to the form. You will still need to visit your eye care provider to be fitted but the lenses will be free!
The Bottom Line
These are great for people that dont wear contact lenses every single day or switch between eyeglasses and contacts. If you are someone that likes the convenience of extended wear or the ability to sleep in your lenses then avoid these, you are simply asking for trouble. For the price you cant beat having a few pairs of these on hand in case you run out of your regular lenses or are a paranoid person that lives in fear of losing a lens and not having a replacement. I have pair of these tucked away on my gym bag in case I am on the road and need to, for whatever reason, change my lenses. I know that I wont get more than about ten days of wear from these but in a pinch it can mean the difference between being able to see and drive and trying to navigate in an almost near-blind state. They are comfortable to wear, dont flop around when you try to put them in and clean up easily with a multi purpose solution
what more could you ask for from a contact lens? If I could get a little more wear out of them I am sure Id pick them up on a regular basis but for now, these are lenses that Ill only buy when I get a super deal on them or they are on sale.
