Acuvue Oasys Hydraclear Plus: Nice Fit But I Still Trip Over Things
Written: Jun 23, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Nice fit, great for distance, $47.00 a box.
Cons:My eyes still get dry.
The Bottom Line: These might be awesome for some people but they're sort of useless for me.
The time finally came when I had to admit that I couldn't get away with my 'old' prescription. When I had my eyes checked and casually strolled out of the exam room to try on same sample contact lenses I got the news. My prescription changed. I knew it but I didn't want to admit it. The glasses I have are still in perfect shape and I wear them often but I wanted to get back in to contact lenses for the summer for the convenience of it. The downside to all of this is that I can't see anything that's about ten inches in front of my face when I have the lenses in. If you've gotten a text message from me over the past month then you know exactly what I mean when I say "typing blind". As far as comfort, the Oasys are less irritating than others but my right lens always feels like it is a little off center. I do have great vision with these but only for distance, anything that is right in front of me is blurry or extremely hard to read. "Oh, just get some +1.5 reading glasses" simply stung when he said it. I have still not found a pair that I even remotely like so I usually only wear the lenses when I am going to be outside walking or running and won't have to drive. This really limits what I can do with any type of contact lens in place; the whole point of my getting contacts again was to eliminate wearing glasses. I got the boxes for $47.00 each, there are six lenses in each box and my eye doctor said to switch them about every two weeks. I don't see that happening because I am not going to be wearing them every single day. While I do that like that there is UV protection with them, I am going to be wearing sunglasses so it's a moot point. The boxes are a lot more compact than the ones I normally get; the price on them is about average from what I have seen but I could have gotten a $75.00 rebate if I would have bought one on the huge package deals from them. Not interested in that in the least considering my current prescription. I know if I went to Mexico I could probably get these for half the price; my other lenses were $12.00 to $15.00 a box there and they were the real deal, not knock-off items. If you have a prescription for them and are thinking about getting them online, look at the bottom line price. Some sites are offering these for as little as $20.00 a box but you have to buy five boxes [a total of ten boxes] for each eye at one time to get that price. You also have to make sure you are getting the boxes of six lenses and there is no rebate involved with it. Likewise, if you have to pay a membership fee in order to place an order, keep looking around because these kinds of memberships are a rip off in my opinion. These feel a little thinner than other contacts I have worn so figuring out which way they go in can be a little tricky. My eye doctor raved about these to the point that I started wondering if he had some vested interest in the lenses or the company. To me they are lenses. They get stuck on my eyeball and help me see. I have worn contacts for years and years so to me it's not like "ohhh, a whole new world" or anything even close. They do seem to be a little more sturdy than some of the other contact lenses I have had, none of them have ripped yet. The Oasys lenses are made in the United States but have a plethora of languages on the box. You are going to want to keep the box incase you have any problems and need the lot number. I think I will eventually get through all six pairs but I don't think I am going to be wearing them every single day. Even if I find a pair of reading glasses that I like and I am able to have long distance and close up vision, there are times when I just can't be bothered putting them in. If my hands are covered in ink or dirt then I have to really scrub to get them clean enough to put the lenses in, I can just grab my glasses, throw them on and get on with things. Like all contact lenses, never try to use a lens that has a rip or tear and never share them with other people. That might sound odd but people do share lenses. I can't even stand shaking someone else's hand so the thought of putting a lens that someone else had worn in my eye makes me want to vomit. Washing your hands before handling the lens will dramatically reduce the risk of eye infection but you are going to want to make sure that you are using a scent free soap as well as drying your hands with a lint free towel. It's a lot of common sense but sometimes people try to save a minute or two, I think they'd reconsider if someone told them that they are risking a huge infection by not washing their hands first.
