Softwash Cleansing Cloths: It's a rash in a box!

After the last weekend visit to my parent's house, it was pretty obvious to me that I needed to find a more convenient product for bathing my son when we're not at home. I had taken one of Johnson's travel packs to my parent's house a few months back, but because the baby wash, shampoo and lotion are separate bottles, it took us about 15 minutes to track all three bottles down. We received the Johnson's Softwash baby wash and shampoo as baby shower gifts and have been using them for about five months now. Both products work great for our son, but taking along both full-size bottles every time we travel would be inconvenient. A few weeks ago I noticed that Target now had these new Johnson's Softwash Cleansing Cloths. I had a coupon for $.50 off any Softwash product with me, so I picked up a box of these cloths.
The side of the Cleansing Cloth box states:
"Best for Baby. Best for You. Johnson's Softwash Cleansing Cloths already have Johnson's Softwash baby wash in the fabric and help retain skin's natural moisture balance while washing, to leave skin feeling soft and smooth. Our "No More Tears" formula with hydrating moisturizers is allergy - and dermatologist - tested so it's gentle on baby's skin and great for washing your face. Johnson's Cleansing Cloths are softer than regular wash cloths, and strong enough to last through an entire washing. Plus, the cleansing cloths are disposable, so you don't have to worry about the build-up of germs."
The lowdown:
Each box of Johnson's Softwash Cleansing Cloths contains 28 dry disposable cloths, measuring 8x8" each. They come packaged in a pink cardboard box, and on the inside is a white plastic bag that actually contains the cloths. These cloths are very soft to the touch, and definitely strong - you can't tear them by hand (I tried). They smell just like the liquid Softwash (a fresh, clean baby smell, albeit a little girly, IMO), however, the scent doesn't seem to linger once you're done with the bath. We try to bathe our son every other day, so that's roughly 3 times a week. Since there are 28 cloths in a box, one box will last us approximately 9 weeks, just a little over two months. Of course, that's assuming that my son doesn't pee on me during another bath like he did the first time I bathed him using these cloths. I had to use the cleansing cloth to cover him up so he wouldn't pee all over the bathroom counter...unlike a plain washcloth you can just rinse out and start over with, if you rinse the cleansing cloths out, all the Softwash disappears and you have to get a new cloth. Our son is six months old, and these cloths are large enough and contain just enough Softwash to bathe him. If you have a newborn, you could probably cut these cloths in half and make them last longer.
Are these as good as liquid Softwash?
Well, unfortunately I think I have to say no. I was interested in trying these, because we really like the regular Softwash products, and the cloths just seemed so convenient. They are more convenient, but my husband and I noticed yesterday that our son has a rash - a bunch of little bumps all over his body. He did have peas for the first time a few days ago (around the first time we also used these cloths), but I don't think the bumps are a result of a pea allergy...I'm pretty sure it's a reaction to the Johnson's Softwash Cleansing Cloths. I called his pediatrician just to ask them, and the nurse said if my son doesn't have a fever, no vomiting, etc then the rash is probably due to the cloths. My son doesn't have sensitive skin, so I'm not sure if it's a particular ingredient in the cloths, or the cloth itself that irritated him. (I can say, on the side of the box, Johnson's claims that these are also good for removing makeup. I tried that Wednesday night, and while it did remove my eye makeup, I noticed that these things felt a little harsh - not as soft as I expected they would. On a positive note, the "No More Tears" statement is true; my eyes didn't sting while using the cloth). These may just be too abrasive for young babies.
All in all...
Because these cloths seem to have given our son a rash, I won't be buying them again. I doubt we'll even use the other 25 or so we have left in the current box. If you know your child isn't allergic to any of the ingredients below, then they might work better for you. Hey, if you want to try them, go to my profile page and send me an email with your address. Directions for Use
1. Moisten the cloth with warm water.
2. Lather cloth and wash baby's body.
3. Rinse baby with cloth.
Discard after one use. Do not flush.
Where to buy and what you'll pay:
You can probably find the Johnson's Softwash Cleansing Cloths at any local retailer (Target, Walmart, etc) or grocery store that carries the Johnson's brand. Johnson's website also lists six online retailers that you can buy from: babycenter.com, cvs.com, drugstore.com, eckerd.com, netgrocer.com, and walgreens.com. I found these at Target for about $3.99 and I had a $.50 off coupon, so I paid about $3.50 for them.
