| Staceys1's Full Review: Jose Tejas |
Last Saturday night our family went to Jose Tejas for dinner. We knew that it would probably be crowded, and were not quite sure what to expect since we had not been there in at least eight years, but it turned out to be a good choice.
If you have ever been in Iselin, New Jersey and driven on Route 1 North, near the Woodbridge Mall, then you have probably seen the huge blue and red neon sign that simply says EAT with an arrow under the word. This is the sign that indicates you are nearing Jose Tejas
After searching around the internet to locate any information on this restaurant, I was able to determine that they were indeed "child-friendly", although I was not able to find a website for them.
We arrived just before 6:30 on Saturday night, and although the large parking lot was extremely crowded, there were still a few empty spots on the far side of the lot. I put our name on the waiting list and was told that it would be at least an hour's wait. We explained this to our children (ages 3 and 4 years) who agreed to wait in the crowded bar/waiting area.
There were a few seats available, but most of the crowd stood while waiting. A few baby toys were on a shelf and even though my children were too old for them, they did keep occupied with them for a short time. The wait was not as bad as I anticipated and we were seated in less time than we were originally told (and the kids held up pretty well!).
The food we ordered was hot, fresh and was brought to our table fairly quickly. We started with the complimentary chips that were still warm from the oven. For an appetizer we ordered the Cajun Fried Mozzarella ($4.86) which comes with a Spicy Ranchero Sauce. My husband loved it, but the spices in the breading were too much for me, and I did not even try the sauce. My four year old son was brave and he even ate a good portion of them, without the sauce.
For their main dishes, both children ordered hamburgers and french fries from the children's menu. The price? $2.98! Additionally, Jose Tejas does offer juice for them if you prefer that they do not have soda.
My husband ordered the combination beef and chicken fajitas and I ordered the chicken fajitas ($8.88 each). The fajitas come with rice or beans, and I was able to substitute french fries at no extra cost. They offer Pico de Gallo, sour cream, shredded cheese, tomatoes and guacamole and you may choose three of these to accompany the fajitas.
There was more than enough food on my plate and I could not finish it all. Add in some beverages, and our total bill with tax was $39.10, which is definitely a reasonably priced dinner for a family of four.
This is a very child-friendly, family restaurant. Crayons were given to us along with paper placemats which had activities on them. There are two children's menus to choose from:
Jose Tejas offers a variety of foods and probably has something for everyone. There are Cajun and Mexican appetizers, Gumbo, Salads, Mexican specialties, Cajun favorites, and a Vegetarian menu. Additionally, if you are dining with a less than adventurous eater, standard meals such as a Ribeye Steak and Mesquite Grilled Hamburger are offered. They also offer a bar, with Margaritas, Sangria, beers, wines and even Dom Perignon at $125 per bottle if you are celebrating something special.
Jose Tejas would be a good choice for a group of friends to go out to celebrate an occasion. It is rather dark and rustic inside, and can be very, very loud. This is not the restaurant to choose if you want a a romantic, peaceful atmosphere, or one where you can carry on a quiet conversation. However, if you want a really good meal, then Jose Tejas is the place!
