Joseph's Sugar-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies - Sorry, Joseph, these aren't too good.
Written: Jan 13 '09 (Updated Jan 13 '09)
Pros:No sugar, generous distribution of chips.
Cons:I just don't like the taste.
The Bottom Line: I enjoy most of the Joseph's brand sugar-free cookies. But this variety is not their best.
Ah... a chocolate chip cookie. What could be better than a sweet, delicious cookie, loaded up with rich, chocolatey chips? I remember from my childhood enjoying this delicious snack. Sadly, now that I don't eat a lot of sugar, my options are limited when it comes to these treats. Joseph's Lite Cookies company does offer a sugar-free chocolate chip cookie, but it's far from the delicious snack I remember from my youth.
Joseph's makes a lot of sugar-free snacks. Some are definitely better than others. Their chocolate chip cookie is not great.
These cookies are small, just over an inch in diameter. The chip distribution is generous, with most cookies containing several chips. However, the taste of this cookie is just bad. The cookie, itself, is very plain. The chip is nearly tasteless, and when you put it all together, you get something that's fairly salty, a little bit sweet, but is not at all identifiable as a chocolate chip cookie. Sorry, Joseph, I'm normally a fan of your cookies, but this one needs some retooling.
The ingredients are Maltitol, canola oil, Maltitol-sweetened chocolate chips, natural flavor, and baking soda. You'll notice that Maltitol is used to sweeten the cookie, as well as the chips. Like all sugar alcohols, Maltitol can cause gastric distress if you're not used to it. So eat these with caution until you're sure how your system will react. As for me, I can eat 3 of these cookies at once, but I wouldn't eat more than that.
4 cookies are considered a serving, and there are approximately 11 servings in the 11 oz. bag. Each serving has 95 calories, 5g of fat, and 40mg of sodium. Not the worst snack in the world. The foil bag does not reseal; I wish it did.
Joseph's cookies are sold in my local supermarket, in a special section of the cookie aisle. At just under $4 a bag, they're a bit more expensive than most of the other sugar-free cookie options out there. But for a lot of the flavors, they're worth it. In this case, they are not.
