| popsrocks's Full Review: Joseph's Restaurant |
While in Charleston my wife and I went out to eat for every meal. Just down the block from the Charleston Hotel was Joseph's Restaurant. This is on 129 Meeting Street that is a main street in Charleston and the restaurant is right in the heart of the downtown historic area. It is also a short walk to the Market area where strolling and shopping go hand in hand.
The Restaurant
This place serves breakfast and lunch only. They did not post their hours, at least that I could find. I would give them a call at 1 (843) 958 8500.
It's not much of a place inside or out. The two brightly lighted small rooms have a few tables and great food! The bright yellow walls give this small place a cheery mood. The open kitchen station lets you see everything being cooked to order. The waitstaff is quick and very friendly. I found that all Charleston is extremely friendly.
One of the items that brought us in was the promise of Orleans Beignets. We had them at Cafe Dumond in New Orleans and loved them so much we brought the recipe home along with the ingredients to make them. We learned that Joseph's knows how to make them well too!
Menu
I had the Roasted Green and Red Peppers, Onion, & spicey Sausage and Chedder Cheese, $7,75. It was cooked as ordered and the sausage was excellent with just the right amount of spice without overwhelming the meat by being too hot.
They have a number of omelets specials. The Fresh crab, Oven Dried Tomatoes, Ricotta Cheese & Fresh Herbs, $8.95 sounded wonderful.
You can order substitute egg beaters for another $1.50
The omelet did come with choice of Breakfast Potatoes, Grits, OR Toast. I had the grits that were terrific and opted to purchase a side order of rye toast.
Joseph's also has a few Benedict selections like their Classic- Poached Eggs, served on Holland Rusks W/Canadian Bacon Topped W/Homemade Hollandaise Sauce, $7.25. This was my wifes choice and she loved it. The presentations are fine.
They also have the Filet Benedict with the eggs over Grilled Filet and Roasted Peppers W Bernaise Sauce.
They have another part of their menu dedicated to Cakes, French Toast and Eggs. Many different combos are offered at prices $5.95-$6.95
We never had lunch at this place but the menu looked just fine and diverse. Crab Cakes W/Sundried Tomatos and also Fried Green Tomatoes headed the menu. The New Orlean Po Boy served in a crispy French Loaf W/Shredded Lettuce, Plum Tomatoes, and Relish Aioli with a huge portion of Fried Shrimp, $8.95, Fried Oysters, $9.95, or fried scallops, $10.95, looked VERY tempting. Much of the lunch menu has southern recipes and also basics like Pastrami, Turkey Club, and Rueben Sandwiches. These were all priced at about $7.25-$8.50 The Creole Classic and Cranberry Bog sounded interesting too.
The sandwiches come with choice of pasta salad, potato salad, cole slaw, OR French fries. the extra sides are $1.75
The menu also has marked "Heart Smart" offerings
Joseph's also has Salads, Pasta and Pizza so it is diverse and a good place to stop in for a take out while on strolling Meeting Street.
Last Thoughts
I like this place because it is bright in the morning, serves quickly and I can get right to site seeing. The food is nicely presented, nothing all that special, and well prepared. The prices are good and it's the varied menu offering items I cannot get in NY that are especially good to try.
