I became hooked on the books in the In Death series after reading and loving Naked in Death. I now pick up the new books in the series as they are released. I’ve been reading the books in the series again and just finished with Judgment in Death, the eleventh book in the series. The In Death series is a futuristic romantic suspense series. Judgment in Death took place in the spring of 2059. The series features a group of returning characters led by Eve Dallas, a homicide detective in New York City. Each book has dealt with a different investigation that Eve was working on. Delia Peabody worked as Eve’s aide on the investigations. Feeney, the detective in charge of the Electronic Detective Division, usually became involved in the investigations. Ian McNab was another EDD detective that ended up working on Eve’s cases. He and Delia had started a relationship. Some of each book also dealt with Eve’s relationship with her wealthy husband Roarke. The characters used several futuristic gadgets in each book. Eve and Delia’s new case involved a police officer that was beat to death with a baseball bat in a strip club that Roarke owned. Eve learned some things that indicated that the murdered cop had been dirty. She was warned away from some aspects of the investigation by someone who worked in Internal Affairs. Other cops were murdered and evidence showed they were dirty as well. Some other cops were turning against Eve because it looked like she was going after cops. The killer was judging the victims and let Eve know that she and Roarke were possible future targets. The mystery in Judgment in Death was well done and interesting. It wasn’t simple to figure out but it wasn’t really complicated either. I had no trouble keeping track of what was going on even when I still wasn’t sure what would happen next or how things would work out. Eve had the extra complication of having some cops turn against her during the investigation and accuse her of being a puppet for Internal Affairs. The book kept me guessing about who was killing the cops. The violence wasn’t as graphic as it has been in some of the other books in the series. Eve and Roarke’s marriage has been an important aspect in all of the books without distracting from the mysteries. They had a strong marriage and loved each other. They were both still adjusting to being married, though it did seem like Roarke had adjusted more than Eve had. They both had to deal with Roarke’s jealousy with another cop that Eve had been briefly involved with made it clear he still had feelings for her. Eve was baffled by that and did have some trouble dealing with Roarke being jealous. That whole situation did add some complications to their relationship until they got it worked out. There were some sex scenes between Eve and Roarke throughout the book. The scenes were descriptive without being really graphic. The scenes could be too descriptive for some readers. Delia and Ian were dating though not much of their relationship was shared. Delia still hadn’t told Ian the truth about her relationship with Charles. That did bother me and I believed it would cause some problems in the future for them. Eve and Roarke continued to be the main characters in series with Eve being slightly more developed than Roarke. There are still things about both of them that remain a mystery. Both of them are likable characters and I love that they are back in every book. Summerset has been in every book so far at least briefly. He and Roarke had known each other for years and Summerset was now Roarke’s butler. Summerset was very loyal to Roarke and hadn’t liked Eve at first. Certain things had made him change his mind even though he still acted like he didn’t like her. Delia had been working as Eve’s aide for a while and the two women had developed a friendship. Delia was a good cop that was still learning some things. Ian was fun loving but could be serious about some things. Eve and Feeney had known each other for many years since he had trained her. The two had remained friends after Eve became a detective. Dr. Mira was the psychiatrist that worked for the police department. She considered Eve a friend and was frequently concerned about her. Nadine Furst was a reporter that Eve gave interviews too about some of her cases. Nadine would hold off on sharing information when Eve asked. When she started the In Death series, Nora Roberts decided to use the name J.D. Robb for the books. I read all of the In Death books and then moved on to the books she wrote as Roberts. I have enjoyed both groups of books and think that other people could as well. Both groups of books are well written and descriptive with likable characters. The In Death books have stronger mysteries and more violence while the other books tend to have a bigger focus on relationships. The main difference in the books is that the In Death books are set in the future. She wrote one book, Remember When, that has both names for authors. The book started in current times and then finished up in Eve’s time. A mystery connected the two halves of the book. Eve’s part of Remember When took place between Imitation in Death and Divided in Death. Judgment in Death was a very entertaining book that fans of the In Death series should enjoy. It is a must read book for people who have read and enjoyed the first ten books in the series.
