Pros: The price is low, the downtown Urbana location is close to nearly everything.
Cons: A pretty good hike from the University of Illinois and overall quite creepy.
The Bottom Line: A little creepy and I wouldn't stay there again.

I stayed at the Historic Lincoln Hotel in mid June of 2005. I needed a room for a Sunday night, asked for the cheapest thing they had, and they gave me the smallest room I had ever stayed in.
The Historic Lincoln Hotel (formerly Jumars Castle Lodge) is a hotel in the heart of downtown Urbana, Illinois. Notable nearby sights include the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (the University of Illinois flagship university) (about 10 blocks away), the Lincoln Square Mall now turning into the Lincoln Square Urban Village (attached to the hotel), a federal court house and state court house within walking distance, some nice restaurants and bars, a strip-mall with a big supermarket, some churches, and a public library.
Put simply, the hotel is old. The dark patterned wallpaper is everywhere, the hallways are dark, the room sheets are dark, the furniture is all dark wood, and the whole inside reminded me of the hotel in The Shining, except narrower hallways. If youre looking for a memorable hotel with character, this is it.
The room I stayed in was barely large enough for the queen size bed. The configuration was made so that the foot of the bed pointed directly through the bathroom door and at the toilet. There was also a bizarre hallway/closet blocked by the TV cabinet, which would have been a perfect place to stow a dead body. (I looked and didnt see any) Anyway, I was staying there alone and the whole place gave me the creeps.
The web site (www.historiclincolnhotel.com) is generally representative of the actual rooms, with the exception of the brightness. The room I stayed in had much worse lighting, but very similar in all other aspects.
As far as I could tell, I was the only person staying in the hotel that night. The free parking lot was empty and there was one person working the front desk--who was very friendly, but like the hotel, a little creepy. Whenever I used the elevators, they were always in the same place I left them.
As far as I could tell, there wasnt anything to do in the hotel. The lobby connected directly to a nearly vacant mall. There was no indication of a weight room, a pool, or anywhere else for guests to relax.
Perhaps my biggest complaint was the noisy air conditioner. Summers in Illinois require an air conditioner or plenty of towels. I tried turning off the air conditioner and opening the one window, but the compressor (or something else outside) made just as much noise.
Through a combination of noise and fear, I didnt fall asleep for hours.
Overall, I probably wouldnt stay at the Historic Lincoln Hotel again. If youre looking for the cheapest room in town, youve probably found it because I only paid $60 (ask them about their discounts). If you like places that are slightly creepy, then youll surely enjoy it.
