| hlbirk's Full Review: Barbara Park - Junie B. Jones: Books 1-8 |
My daughter has been begging me to get her some Junie B. Jones books. I didn't know who that was. She brought home a book order form from school and Scholastic offered an 8-pack of Junie B. Jones books so I jumped at the opportunity.
Junie B. Jones Is A Party Animal is written by Barbara Park and illustrated by Denise Brunkus. There aren't a whole lot of pictures in the book but the few that are in there are mostly just pencil type drawings or sketches.
Junie B. is in kindergarten and she talks just like a kindergartner. My kids think her terminology is absolutely hilarious but I must say it makes a tough read for Mom and Dad. I remember the days of Pippi Longstocking and Junie B. reminds me a lot of Pippi, on a shy bit of better mannered.
In this story Junie B. first raves about her friend 'that Grace' and Lucille. Lucille's Grandma plays a big role in the story also, commonly referred to as Richie Nanna. The 3 girls get together and decide to have a slumber party at Lucille's richie nanna's house, all in the name of getting Junie B. and 'that Grace' to beg Lucille's nanna for a poodle. I absolutely laughed outloud when reading the part where Junie B. explains that Lucille doesn't ride the bus. Lucille does not ride the bus with us. Her richie nanna drives her to school in a big gold car. It is called a Cattle Act, I think. And guess what? Today that big gold Cattle Act was driving right next to the school bus!
Most of the dialogue in the book is spoken in true kindergartner form. Everything is and guess what! Most of them when Junie B. is explaining why she feels or thinks the way she does she always uses terminology that young kids will understand. For example, she runned speedy quick. Or ...only too bad for me. 'Cause I accidentally bounced too high. And I banged my head on the roof.
Richie nanna does the best she can with the 3 little ladies during the slumber party. They entertain the normal slumber party mishaps and get in trouble a couple times. During dinner they got to eat Beans and Frank. Dinnerware was fine China and they drank from crystal glasses. Only guess what? Nobody told Junie B. that crystal was heavy and the glass slipped right out of her hand. She also didn't know that one of the plumpery pillows they were throwing around had a rip in it and it exploded with feathers.
This is a great book for young readers! It doesn't teach proper grammar but it does speak a language that the kids can relate to. You never know what kind of great idea is going to pop into Junie B.'s head but you can bet that she's going to tell you all about it!
Junie B. Jones Is A Party Animal is one of 8 books in the set. We ordered through Scholastic and got all 8 for about $9, if I remember correctly. The ISBN number is 0-590-63917-X. I would highly recommend this book for a funny, whimsical read to your young listeners.
