| mmcphee's Full Review: Barbara Park - Junie B. Jones Is (Almost) a Flower... |
Six and I are taking a break from The Magic Tree House series and we are catching up on our Junie B. Jones. We recently finished Barbara Park's 13th book in the series, Junie B. Jones is (Almost) a Flower Girl.
Meet Junie B. My name is Junie B. Jones. The B stands for Beatrice. Except I don't like Beatrice. I just like B and that's all. And so begins another one of almost six year old Junie B. Jones' adventures. This spunky, precocious kindergartener is ready to be the flower girl in her Aunt Flo's wedding. Unfortunately Junie B.'s future uncle has already asked his younger sister to act as flower girl. Predictably, Junie B. is not happy about the situation; even when her aunt makes her the alternate flower girl, should Bo not be able perform her flower girl duties.
Our Experience The more Junie B. Jones I read with my daughters, the more I grow to like the series. The story is told in the first person, complete with the stream of consciousness that is not uncommon in children this age; I certainly see a little bit of Six in Junie B. This also includes some questionable use of the English language, which usually makes my daughter giggle. Parks does a good job capturing the world from a kindergartener's point of view, especially the excitement of attending a wedding and all of the special clothes that go with it.
Junie B. is impulsive in (Almost) a Flower Girl, but a little better behaved than usual; she is focused on showing everyone what a grown-up girl she can be. She does however, attempt to take a few petals from the flower girl, resulting in a little tussle over the basket.
Little tussle is the grown-up word for how come she just won't let go of the darned thing! As in most Junie B. Jones books there are a few laugh out loud scenes, but there is not much in the way of name calling that often causes me to cringe. However, Junie B. does wish upon a star, hoping Bo will get sick so she can be the flower girl. This is not something Junie B.'s mom will let her get away with, but some parents may not like the ideas it puts in their children's heads. But I do think parents can appreciate that Junie B. does not get her way, which one might expect in a book aimed at younger children.
Final Thoughts Junie B. Jones is (Almost) a Flower Girl is a funny book appropriate for children in kindergarten on up, although I think by 3rd grade most children have outgrown this early chapter book series. Some parent may disapprove of Junie B.'s grammar and behavior, but we just find it funny. This is a book more likely to appeal to girls than boys with its focus on the excitement of fancy wedding clothes and flower girl duties.
