Just Born Hand Feeding Kit for Puppies or Kittens
I raise Miniature Longhaired Dachshunds. I generally have between four and six liters a year. Usually whelping goes very smooth and the girls don't experience any complications. That being said, once in awhile a mom will have a larger liter than she can feed by herself or become impacted where there is no milk for any of the puppies. During these situations I use the Just Born Hand Feeding Kit with the Just Born Puppy formula to feed our puppies. I have found these kits to be very good and inexpensive. I used to buy a bottle from my vet for three times the price with no extra nipples or the cleaning brush. Now I get the two oz. bottle, two extra nipples and a cleaning brush for around six dollars.
What's in the kit? ~ A two oz. bottle calibrated by tablespoon for feeding accuracy ~ Heat resistant bottle, nipples and cleaning brush can be sterilized with boiling water ~ Durable, long-lasting made for repeated use and sterilizations ~ Can be used for kittens, puppies and other small animals
Directions •1. Nipples need to be pierced with a sterile hot pin or razor blade to cut a small X. •2. Measure the appropriate amount of milk replacer / formula into the bottle. •3. After each use rinse the bottle and nipple out using the brush and hot water. Then sterilize the bottle, nipple and brush in boiling water.
Conclusion Hand feeding puppies takes time, patience and practice. Just like anything else it gets easier with experience. With puppies I use the razor to cut an X in the top of the nipple (kittens would use smaller holes in the nipple) . As the pups get older I'll snip the very tip of the nipple off with sharp scissors so the pups can get more milk. You have to be very careful with newborn pups. Never force or squeeze milk into a pup's mouth as you can drown them, they have no gag reflex at this age. With work, patience and trying different positions eventually the puppy will suckle the milk from the bottle. Once they do it a couple of times they know what it is and they catch right on. I have been using the Just Born puppy hand feeding kits and liquid milk replacement formula for a couple of years now and it's worked well for my puppies. I also use the Just Born milk replacer mixed with puppy food (slightly warmed) to start my puppies eating solid food. It's a quality product and a must have for people raising puppies! It's also the only bottle I have ever purchased that comes with a cleaning brush. It's very handy for the small 2 oz. brush.
