| fostrmom2mny's Full Review: Mercer Mayer - Just Grandpa and Me |
Mercer Mayer is the author and illustrator of this book as well as many other popular Children’s Books. Mercer was born on December 10, 1943 in Little Rock, Arkansas. His father was in the Navy so the family moved around to many different places. Many of the places were located in the South. It was during his childhood years that he first recalls and writes about some of his fears and joys of a young boy growing up.
He went to art school after he graduated from high school where his professors discouraged his ambition to become an illustrator for children’s books, because they felt he could not make a living at it.
After he graduated, Mayer worked in the art department of an advertising agency. He eventually abandoned this work to concentrate on his career as a children's book illustrator.
In 1976 he joined Golden Publishing, publishers of the inexpensive Golden Books. His "Little Critter" series and "Little Monster" series are very popular and account for much of his publishing efforts. These books are brightly illustrated with simple, plots that teaches a lesson about life. He has written and or illustrated more than eighty picture books He enjoys telling stories through pictures and words. He often sees things from a little boy's point of view, which places his books close to the hearts of children.
Just Grandpa And Me is one of those books. It starts with Little Critter needing a new suit. His Grandpa took him to the city to buy one. First they bought train tickets, then boarded the train. Little Critter taught his Grandpa how to sing “Ninety-nine bottles of pop on the wall.” (The other passengers weren’t amused.)
When they went to the store in the city, they went through the revolving door and went around and around. Just Little Critter and his Grandpa. (The other customers weren’t very amused.)
He held on to his Grandpa’s hand so Grandpa wouldn’t get lost, but Grandpa did get lost. (Little Critter held the hand of a suit on a rack by mistake.) He found Grandpa and they took the escalator to the Critter suits department.
After scattering suits of all different colors all over the floor, he finds just the right one. It’s green and yellow checked. In the background you see a turtle looking at the turtlenecks!
Grandpa and Little Critter then went to see a movie. A scary movie. He sat real close to Grandpa so he wouldn’t get scared. The popcorn bucket spills popcorn all over the other moviegoers.
They had supper at a Chinese restaurant. Little Critter showed Grandpa how to use chopsticks. (Noodles were strewn everywhere.)
They boarded the train back home and Little Critter was so excited to get home and show his mom his new suit. He took a nap on the way home then showed his Mom his new suit. She was so proud of Little Critter and his new suit. The End
My kids have all loved this book. I have read this book to each of my kids and all loved this book. As we have new foster kids into our home, my kids read the book to them. It sort of acts like a circle.
This is a Level 1 book for beginning readers. Some of the humor that is in the book is designed in the pictures and is easily understood by the young children. It is a Golden Look-Look Book and cost $1.50.
