Delicious Dehydrated Strawberries

Pros:Nothing added, just freeze dried strawberries
Cons:Very costly, not sweet, too many broken pieces
The Bottom Line: A healthy snack, but I wish they were sweeter. Fresh berries are a better value.
My 18 month old granddaughter loves fruit and we've been buying packages of dehydrated strawberries, bananas and apples. We're just finishing up a container of "Just Strawberries" dehydrated strawberries, and I have mixed feelings about the quality. In comparing the "Just Strawberries" (made by Just Tomatoes) to the Kirkland brand of dehydrated strawberries, the Kirkland brand wins hands down.

Just Strawberries claim to be "100% Natural" as well as "Crunchy and Delicious". They are freeze dried with nothing added, no preservatives and no sweeteners. Some people who are allergic to nuts have to be careful about everything they eat because foods are often processed by machinery that also processes nuts and there can be cross contamination which can cause allergic reactions. These strawberries are nut free and gluten free.
The back of the bag states these are sweet, but in fact our package was actually a bit sour, which is one of my main complaints about them. Many of the strawberries were also broken up into small pieces, which was a bit of a disappointment as they are harder to feed to a toddler.
These can be added to a bowl of cereal, and the strawberries do rehydrate when eaten this way. If added to yogurt or oatmeal they pretty much remain a bit crunchy. I like to let them dissolve in my mouth, but again I wish they were sweeter. If you want a slightly sweet crunchy treat, these might just hit the spot, and I do eat them straight from the container when there isn't anything else to snack on.
My 18 month old granddaughter loves these, but she hasn't been exposed to a lot of sugar and sweets so the fact that they are a bit sour doesn't seem to bother her at all. I do like the fact that they are all natural with nothing added, but I'd rather give her fresh strawberries.
We sometimes put a handful in a baggie and add them to her diaper bag and give them to her when we are in the car or when she is sitting in a grocery shopping cart. They haven't left any red stains on her hands, which is really nice.
As I stated earlier, I purchased smaller bags of freeze dried strawberries made by Kirkland and they were whole, not broken up pieces, and they were sweeter than the Just Strawberries brand. The 4 ounce container retails for around $14.00, which is much more expensive than fresh strawberries. To be sure fresh strawberries are messier and will leave stains, but I think organic strawberries are probably healthier and a better value.
