Bug Meets His Friend, for a Day of Adventure
Written: May 07 '10
Pros:The rhyming patterns; the Illustrations
Cons:Some rhyming lines less smooth than others
The Bottom Line: This is a fun children's book with memorable rhymes and illustrations.
Solo entertainment has some advantages, but teaming up with a friend is usually even better. The good times shared between two friends is the theme of this book, Bug Meets His Friend, a children's book by K.M. Grosher. Basic Book Facts: Bug is a small car looking to have some fun. He has his choices narrowed down to two: Go to the playground to play or race at the racetrack. Both activities sound like fun, but Bug cannot make up his mind. He heads toward the road, still pondering how best to spend this wonderful day. Suddenly, Bug sees his friend Cooper coming down the road. He decides it would be fun to spend the day with Cooper, so he asks his friend which activity he would like best. Cooper suggests a day at the racetrack. The track was covered in snow, but it didn't discourage the two friends. They revved up their engines and raced around the track. They had loads of fun, but the day was ending. The two cars parted ways and headed back home while Bug quietly reminisced about his day of adventure with his best friend. Final Thoughts: Bug Meets His Friend is another in the "Bug" series: A new line of children's books that feature a small car named Bug and his many adventures/learning experiences. This children's book is 42 pages in length and is aimed at older elementary school- age children. It is a book about making a decision, having fun, and enjoying the day- things to which most children can easily relate. This book is about friendship more than anything and most children with a best friend will understand exactly what Bug feels like as he races around the track with his best bud. The book emphasizes that exploring by yourself can also be fun and rewarding, but the book stresses the additional fun that can had when sharing good times with a friend. Cooper comes out of nowhere and quickly helps Bug make a decision. The two enjoy a great day of fun before parting ways for the day, completely content with their decision and anxious to do the same thing again. This book, like the others in this new series, features plenty of rhyming and rhythm. Every other line rhymes and while some of the words and patterns are less in sync than others, the rhyming pattern continues all the way to book's end. Kids will like the rhythmic nature of the book and even though the book is 42 pages in length and contains more words per page than most other children's books, it moves along at a quick pace, due to the rhyming patterns. Another one of this book's positive points is its illustrations. The illustrations are like an animated cartoon and are first- rate. Author K.M. Groshek created the illustrations herself and I like the way she illustrates the cars. Here, you have an inanimate object like a car brought to life as a person and seeming just like a person. Sure, it has been done before by other books and other illustrators, but the effort here is still commendable and the illustrations are original. Overall, Bug Meets His Friend is a very good children's book with a good lesson for kids, great illustrations, and memorable rhyming. Not all of the lines of text offer consistent rhythm, but the rhymes are present throughout, making for a fun read that will have some kids repeating the lines as they watch Bug and Cooper enjoying their day of fun.
