jeavinl's Full Review: Kaboost Portable Chair Boost
When my daughter turned four last year, she looked like a giant in her high chair. Although she still didn't quite reach the table when seated at a big chair, she wanted to... so badly. We tried putting a phone book or a couple of pillows under her. Both were uncomfortable or unsatisfactory and she would end up kneeling on the chair so she'd have more height. I started doing some research into what else was available. I couldn't possibly have the only kid who is too grown-up for a high chair but too small for a grown-up chair. Enter the Kaboost!
Where's the Kaboost? I found our Kaboost for $39.99 at my local Babies R Us, but only after several phone calls to area stores. It is not a widely sold product and not all colors are easy to procure. I wanted the chocolate brown Kaboost, which was near impossible to find more than one of at any given store. So you might be best off ordering online. It is available in several colors: lime green, chocolate brown, natural, and charcoal.
What's a Kaboost? Unlike some of the boosters I found during my research, the Kaboost does not sit on top of the chair and under your child's bottom. Instead, the Kaboost fits under the legs of the chair to raise the entire chair higher. It works on 4-legged chairs only, and is less effective on folding chairs. But other than those two points to note, the Kaboost works well under any situation. It's lightweight, foldable, easy to transport, does not effect your dining room motif, and makes your child feel like a grown-up. It's very stable with its rubberized feet and it holds tightly onto chair legs. It can be adjusted to two heights: 4.5 inches and 3.75 inches with a turn of the arms. At most, the arms can be stretched 30 inches apart. It is meant for children ages 2 to 6 and can hold up to 300 lbs. A travel bag is sold separately (it's included with the deluxe charcoal color) for $7.95. How to Use a Kaboost? There's no assembly required. The Kaboost consists of a central circle with four adjustable spring-activated arms sticking out of it. They hang free and fold down when not in use, making storage easy. When you want to put them under a chair, simply stretch the four Kaboost arms out so that the chair legs fit into each of the four slots. I usually get my hubby to help me with this. It's not a hard task, but it's much easier with two people since the opposite arms will snap back if you don't hold them stretched. So while he holds two of the Kaboost arms, I pull out the other two. With two people, it takes 30 seconds tops. If I try to do it on my own, that stretches to a couple minutes.
What We Like about Our Kaboost My daughter loved this thing from day one. Suddenly she could sit at the dining room table and feel like an adult while baby bro sat in his wheeled white high chair with a tray. She didn't need to kneel on the chair or feel awkwardly unstable because of a telephone book under her butt. She reached the tabletop without any issues.
I'm happy to have one less nasty high chair taking up room in my house. The chocolate brown Kaboost looks natural under my cherry wood dining room chair. It's not bad under my maple kitchen chairs either. But the kitchen chairs are folding ones and the Kaboost has, on a couple of occasions, snapped closed when my kid was fooling around on the chair. So I try to only use the Kaboost on stable, four-legged, nonfolding chairs. What We Don't Like about Our Kaboost There are two other problems we've encountered. The first is that the Kaboost adds height to the chair, making it harder for a little one to climb onto. So, in the beginning, I had to lift my daughter onto and off of the chair. The other problem, which is more of a potential problem in our case, is that my dining room table has a lip that hangs down underneath and it's awfully close to my daughter's legs now that her chair is higher and her legs are closer to the bottom of the table. She has not complained about it yet, but I could see it becoming a problem before our use of the Kaboost ends. But the Kaboost designers thought of this...the arms can be adjusted by turning the grip pieces. I did not try adjusting them yet since my daughter has not complained yet.
And the Verdict Is... Still, despite some qualms, I think the Kaboost is an awesome invention. I can take it to Grandma's house, we can use it at home, my nice Thomasville dining room set is starting to look like an adult room again, and my little girl feels like a big kid. That was $40 well spent.
