| TheAdvocate's Full Review: Kashi GoLEAN Cereal |
If you like Kashi Good Friends, you might consider trying its sister cereal, Go Lean. The taste is similar, with the addition of the Sesame Honey Puffs, and the texture is almost identical (those same fibrous, “chromosomal” twigs give it a great crunch). Like Good Friends, Go Lean has only 1 g of fat, but has 2 more grams of fiber, and... (drum roll, please)... Go Lean provides more than 6 grams of soy protein per serving! Adding soy milk to Go Lean will give you approximately 13 grams of soy protein first thing in the morning – half of the recommended daily allowance!
Now, why is soy protein so important?
I’ve touted the benefits of soy in previous Epinions (it’s almost a complete protein; its B-12 content is a must-have for vegetarians; and it’s an estrogen blocker, which can help with menopausal symptoms, PMS, and possibly the prevention of breast cancer).
But there are other benefits of soy that don’t get as much attention. According to Dr. Barry Sears (the Zone diet guru), 1) soy decreases the rate of bone loss (osteoporosis), 2) soy reduces the risk of prostate cancer (as well as breast cancer), 3) soy reduces the risk of heart disease, 4) soy is shown to increase longevity in populations that consume more than 40 g of soy protein per day, 5) soy contains isoflavones (phytochemicals) which are disease-fighting substances, and 6) soy causes your body to release glucagon, the “anti-insulin” hormone. If you suffer from diabetes, carb-addictions or low energy, soy might just be the miracle food you’ve been looking for.
OK, so it’s healthy, but will soy-fortified Go Lean really help you lose weight? If your other meals are sensible and you exercise moderately, yes, it will! This cereal is extremely low in fat and high in fiber – an important element in any weight loss regimen, as regularity keeps fats and toxins moving through the body more quickly.
But, most importantly, Go Lean fills you up. Unlike empty starches and processed, white-flour simple carbs (as are found in most sweet cereals, processed oatmeal, waffles, pancakes, or jellied toast), the complex carbs in Go Lean release more slowly, sustaining your energy until lunch. Let’s face it: you won’t lose weight if your diet cereal leaves you starving by 10:30 am. Of course, if you’re used to peanut butter waffles or syrup-drowned bacon for breakfast, you may find Go Lean less than exciting. But give yourself two weeks on Go Lean, some raw veggies, and processed soy foods (with, yes, a sinful snack every now & then – don’t tell Dr. Sears) and you will feel absolutely wonderful, think more clearly, sleep better, and probably drop a good 4 waterless pounds. (Don’t try to lose more than 1 or 2 pounds per week; it’s just not good for you!)
I have no idea why Epinions suggests that Go Lean is designed for men… for what reason, the soy’s phytoestrogen content? Let me go out on a limb and recommend this cereal for women, as well. Probably the best news, however, is that I can find Go Lean for less than $4 at my local grocery store, quite a bit less than the Epinions “Estimated Price” of $54. (heh heh!)
