Chris_Billings's Full Review: Kasugai Cola Soda Candy
Whenever I come across some interesting "import" candy, I always have to pick some up. The other day I bought a bag of hard candy. I'm usually not a big fan of hard candy, but I was in the mood for something different. I happened to be on break at the mall when I came across a bag of Kasugai Soda Candy. Only one flavor was available at the time, so I was stuck with the Jiwa-Jiwa Cola flavor.
The candies are approximately penny sized in diameter and individually wrapped in little odd-shaped silver and red wrappers. These particular candies really do taste like Cola flavored Soda. Most "cola" candies only taste a little bit like what they are supposed to be. But Kasugai did a great job in recreating the proper flavor. The candies have a slight "fizz" to them, and after having only two in a row it started to burn my tongue. The serving size was listed as "3", but I would probably have to say that one piece once in a while is the way to go with these candies. Even Warheads don't burn my tongue like these candies do. I'm not sure if it's because of the citric acid or the sodium carbonate (or both) that is the "main" cause for the burning sensation.
Each piece contains 28+ mg of sodium, making it a little higher in sodium than some other hard candies I have come across. So if you are sensitive to sodium you might want to eat these sparingly (very sparingly!). But these candies are addicting at the same time. They taste pretty good and they are different than most candies you'll come across at the local grocery store. I found these candies at Walden Books for only $3.49 a bag. Since F.Y.E. is no longer in the mall here in the Spokane Valley, I have to rely on Walden Books or The Comic Book Shop to obtain Japanese Candy. Hopefully the next time I stop in they'll have some other flavors available, maybe in a variety pack too.
So if you like to try interesting candies from around the world, you should pick up a bag of Kasugai Soda Candy. The cola flavor tastes a lot like Coca-Cola® brand soft drink. The candies last for a long time too. Unless you start to crunch on the candy early, an individual piece will last for almost an 30 minutes. The fizz lasts the whole time it's in your mouth too! _________________________
