davidmanning's Full Review: Kasugai Gummy- 5packs of apple,muscat,orange,grape...
Who doesn't like the texture and flavor of a gummy? And further, who doesn't love the exotic flavors you seemingly only find in Japanese stores?
I'm a fan of the Asian-style gummy, a little chewier, a little sweeter, and in a wider variety of flavors. So once I found asianfoodgrocer.com, I was hooked. I stocked up on all sorts of gummies, and as they stock Kasugai pretty much exclusively in the gummy department, well, that's what I received.
This five-pack was one choice among many, larger packages of gummies, and when you're just clicking away on a website, sure, you'll throw anything in the shopping cart for the heck of it. They're little foil packets with over a dozen gumdrop-shaped candies each, attached to each other in one long strip.
Only most of each package is in Japanese. Fortunately, the grocery website lists the ingredients, and -- surprise! -- the fruit juice concentrate is listed third, behind sugar and corn syrup. Still, that's more fruit juice than most candy, not that I'm watching what I eat. The 86 calories per roughly one-ounce package isn't going to pudge me up, anyway.
How Do They Taste?
Surprisingly, it's like a Wonka magical candy array, thanks to that use of an unspecified percentage of actual juice in the production of the candies:
- The "grape" tastes like purple grape, a big Welch's jelly bomb. It's a different grape flavor than the fake grape you get at the Slurpee machine or in a cereal box, too -- it's much more "real"-tasting.
- The muscat tastes just like white wine grapes, and is my personal favorite.
- The orange ones almost literally burst with orange juice flavor, only considerably sweeter and without the citric acid cutting it.
- Apple? Total apple juice. It's pretty amazing what the Japanese can do with jelling technology, frankly.
- The pineapple was actually an accident, as I picked up plenty of the regular-size pineapple gummis also, but they tasted just like pineapples, but with less of the acid bite.
How can you hate something that tastes like real juice in a semisolid form?
In short...
What else is there to say about a perfect sugar, non-high fructose corn syrup snack? Your calorie count won't skyrocket. The sugar amount, while it's probably not the best choice for diabetics, isn't going to cause your kids to bounce off the walls. And they're perfect for adults, besides. How can you hate on such a goofy food?
Asian Food Grocers, based in California, sell these five-packs for $1.98. Shipping is quite reasonable if you stock up (since it's calculated by weight). It's a far cry from the $5.95 offered through the Amazon partners on this website.
