Chris_Billings's Full Review: Kasugai Gummy- 5packs of apple,muscat,orange,grape...
I love Japanese candy, especially the gummy candies. There is so much to choose from and the variety of flavors is astronomical. How often do you find a candy made from the juice of a Muscat fruit? How many people even know what a Muscat is? Actually I found out the other day what it is. A variety of white grape.
Anyway, I usually a couple times a week go down to F.Y.E. and buy a couple different varieties of Japanese candy. I usually buy a large bag of Kasugai Gummy Candy in a single flavor, but a while back I decided to try the multi pack of flavors. Kasugai sells a "strip" of five packets. You just tear off the package of your desired flavor. Each packet is small enough to fit inside a lunch box, or stow away in a jacket pocket. Each strip has five packets all a different flavor. The flavors available in this particular strip is Apple, Muscat, Orange, Grape, and Pineapple. All of them are pretty good. Orange and Grape are my personal favorites, while the other three flavors are only "good"...they are just stronger in flavor. The Apple Gummy is probably the strongest in flavor and smell as well. As soon as you open the packet, you are blasted with apple scent. It's almost as strong as Apple Cider vinegar. But better tasting of course. I'm not a big fan of Pineapple normally, but these candies are great. They taste exactly how they should. Since they are made mostly of natural juice (small amount of artificial flavoring) the gummies should taste like "real" fruit. The Muscat, Apple, and Pineapple are pretty intense in flavor, and a little packet goes a long way. I love just about any type of Orange or Grape candy, soda, whatever. These are no exception. The gummies almost melt in your mouth. Very nice...very nice!
The gummies are about the size of dimes (maybe smaller) in diameter and are the shape of gum drops. They are also not as chewy as the larger "disc shaped" Kasugai Gummy Candies. It's probably because of the lack of honey used in the smaller versions. I think that the honey contributes to the chewy texture of those. There are about 15 gummies in each bag (give or take). Each strip is $3.99 which is pretty good for five packets of gummies. A serving size (one bag/packet) has only 5g of Sodium and 21g of Carbs, so it's a nice choice to have as a snack between meals. I always keep a large bag of gummies in my locker at work, as well as several strips of these "five packs" at all times.
If you like fruity candy, gummy candy, or just like candy you have got to try these. You can get them from almost any Asian import grocery in your neighborhood, and from several websites. If you have a F.Y.E. in your mall, you should be able to get these gummies there and www.amazon.com sells these at times. And www.play-asia.com sells these in their Toy Section under a sub-section titled "groceries".
