| fredil's Full Review: Katz's Deli |
Katz's is indeed the best looking, old-style deli in the city. The place just ooozes 1940's atmosphere. Old formica tables, cafeteria-style service and wise cracking guys in white aprons and hats carving up all your favorite deli meats.
The sandwiches can be fabulous....or horrible....depending on how observant you are of the signage. I wasn't upon my first visit, and ended up with an inedible corned beef sandwich consisting essentially of fat, gristle and dark mustard on rye. Disgusted, I vowed to fast for a week and, certainly, never EVER return. However, on the way out, I saw a small sign touting "extra lean" for a dollar more. Ooops. Well, on a subsequent visit, that extra buck bought me one of the top corned beefs in the city. Unfortunately, if they don't make that sign bigger, I pray for cardiac health of the Lower East Side.
