| zrice's Full Review: Katz's Deli |
Katz's is now best known as the place where Meg Ryan did her infamous scene in When Harry Met Sally--the one where she shows Billy Crystal how to, well, fake it. But at Katz's there's nothing to fake--it's the real deal, one of the last true New York delis. Even the decor (make sure to notice the WWII era signs hanging from the ceiling: "Send a Salami to Your Boy in the Army") and the sprawling no-frills, but comfortable, tables feel authentic and down to earth amid what's already become a very young and trendy neighborhood. Ok. Here are the things to know at Katz's: 1) Don't order turkey. It's not their specialty, and it's easily forgettable. Go for pastrami or roast beef. 2) Try the cheese blintzes--you get three nice sized ones, with powdered sugar on top. 3) The prices will surprise you--it's not the cheapest deli in the world.
Basically, if you don't need "fancy" and you want a place to meet the gang and chomp down on some major sandwiches, here you go!
Food: I have to admit that Katz's food isn't the best deli food I've had in New York. The matzoh ball soup is a little salty, the turkey is dry, the bread isn't something to write home about...but the pastrami is great, and so are the blintzes, and the chicken soup will help your winter cold.
Service: You can serve yourself if you choose, or sit at a table with waiter service. The service isn't great--but at least the waiters aren't snobby!
Decor: It's rare to have so much space in a New York eatery. The ceilings are high, and the decor is fun, laid-back, and easy-going. Check out the photos of famous people at Katz's (you know Bill Clinton loves a good pastrami sandwich!)
