| sandiegan's Full Review: Kauai Sands Hotel |
We stayed at the Kauai Sands hotel in April 2003 during our 4-day visit to Kauai. We were able to book a "Deluxe" ocean view room using our Entertainment Coupon Book, for a mere $55/night! For the price, I was impressed with the cleanliness of the rooms and its convenient location for exploring the rest of Kauai.
Location
Kauai Sands is located on 8 acres in Wailua, on the east shore of Kauai. The hotel is on the ocean, although the beach is not the best for sunning because it is on a slope. Also, I would not recommend the beach for swimming or surfing because the water seemed rougher than on other parts of Kauai. Kauai Sands is, however, centrally located to the North Shore AND the South Shore, and driving to various parts of the island was made very easy by this central location.
Rooms
Kauai Sands has 250 rooms. There seem to be two types of rooms, Deluxe and Standard. The Deluxe rooms offer an ocean or pool view, and the Standard Rooms have a street view. We stayed in a Deluxe room with a partial ocean view, facing the pool. There are two buildings, parallel to each other, with a pool in the middle. The rooms themselves were simple, standard and clean. The Deluxe room I stayed in had 2 queen beds, a TV with cable, and the other usual amenities. The shower was hot, but the water pressure was weak. Our room also had a lanai (balcony). The décor was somewhat 1970's, but as I said before, the fact that the rooms were clean and well-kept made this a bargain at just $55 per night! (Even without the discount, the prices are set at around $80/night for a Deluxe room.)
Pools and Landscaping
The pool is a standard motel-type pool, nothing very special. The landscaping was also basic and the outside of the hotel looks rather old. As stated above, this isn't the place to stay if you are looking to lounge by the pool!
Dining
The Kauai Sands is adjacent to the Coconut Marketplace, a shopping center with many eateries. There are a few pizza places, dive bars, a breakfast spot, and a couple of sit-down restaurants. It was very convenient for us to walk there for dinner after a long day on the road and trails, though the quality of the food is at average strip-mall level. I do not believe there are any restaurants in the Kauai Sands itself.
Service
The rooms were cleaned everyday, the beds made and fresh towels put in. Checking in and out of the Kauai Sands was made easy by their friendly staff. Because there is no restaurant or other "resort activities" at the Kauai Sands, there was no other service to speak of.
Conclusion
If you are looking for a place to stay while exploring the island, then Kauai Sands is for you! If you are looking for a place to lounge around on vacation, Kauai Sands isn't the best idea because the pool and beach are both mediocre. As a budget traveler, I appreciated having a lanai, ocean view, and the convenience of restaurants, for the cheap price. This is a great place to stay if you are traveling to Kauai on a budget!
