Hello Kitty. I know what you are thinking. Hello Kitty is everywhere. Yes, she certainly is but in most cases its not a bad thing. Bad is when you stroll into Hot Topic and see a goth maiden done up in black from head to toe, as pale as Vlad himself and smelling of Morbid and assorted fruit flavors? Wait, did you say fruit flavors Freak? Yes, indeed I did. I don't normally visit the Hot Topic at the local mall, it is crowded and filled with annoying tweens that think they are so cool their feces are made of ice. Desperate times called for desperate measures and I needed to get an Ozzy Osborne Onsie for a baby shower, yes, such things are sold at Hot Topic. That is when I spotted the box of Hello Kitty Fruit Snacks behind the counter. Not only did she have a pouch open but she was taking a lot of care and effort to meticulously bite he heads off the various Hello Kitty characters. I swear, this chick didnt have teeth, she had fangs. Alas, as the song goes, Hot Topic is not punk rock, neither are Hello Kitty Fruit Flavored Snacks.
Kellogg's Hello Kitty Fruit Flavored Snacks
Made by Kellogg's, these fruit snacks come in assorted Hello Kitty shapes; of course you have Hello Kitty herself but you also have cute bows and stars as well as Kathy [the bunny] and Tippy [the bear]. Yes, I am hanging my head in shame that I know their names. In regards to Hello Kitty, there are three different shapes of her in the pouches. The shapes are not indicative of the flavors so just because you get a blue bow in one pouch doesn't mean that they are all going to be blue. How do they taste? Good but they aren't like a gummy bear or gummy snack. They are a bit chewier and have a different consistency. Kids seem to like them but if they are into Hello Kitty, they will eat pretty much anything HK related and not complain. Annabelle likes them, she likes to line them up on her plate when she is having lunch and figure out which flavor to start with.
OK, so kids like them but how about adults? Me, well, I have eaten them and they are about average for a gummy snack but they aren't Swedish Fish and they certainly arent Gummy Bears. The flavors are nice but not over powering; they vary from pouch to pouch are 'assorted'. What are the flavors? Cherry, orange, grape and strawberry. Don't worry, these aren't filled with real fruit, it's all artificial colors and flavors so there is no danger of ingesting anything that is considered good for you. The big appeal here is that the treats come in Hello Kitty shapes and if it isnt in the shape of Hello Kitty then it is something that she carries around or is associated with her. Kellogg's does pimp these out with the "100% Daily Allowance of Vitamin C" but honestly, they aren't all that great [at least not to me] and chances are most kids would benefit from eating a piece of fruit rather than noshing on these.
The individual packets are a nice snack for younger kids and since they are individually sealed they are great for packing in a lunch or to have for snacks in the car. Nutritionally these aren't all that bad but at the same time, they arent all that great either. One pouch contains 80 calories, 21 grams of carbohydrates [14 from sugar], no fat and no protein. That's a lot of carbohydrates for a snack but if this is something that you are getting for kids and they are active, it shouldn't be that big of a deal if they are active and can burn off the sugar in them. I recently got the Betty Crocker Tonka Fruit Flavored Snacks for Jackson and they are almost identical to these only the packets are slightly smaller and they are in the shape of Tonka vehicles. Even so, I thought it really funny that they both had the same taste and texture.
The Bottom Line
I have seen these sell for as much as four dollars a box and for as little as a dollar. When I got the Tonka ones for $1.00 on clearance I thought I was getting a great deal but it turns out that the individual packets were smaller so I was getting less than I thought. I got these at Save-A-Lot for $2.00 a box and then they price dropped to $1.50 and then eventually $1.00. When they hit a dollar a box they were gone within a day. I did stock up on them but wasn't about to go crazy and buy twenty boxes of them. I knew that if I did that Annabelle would get bored with them and there was no way I was going to get stuck eating them. If you are a Hello Kitty fan or know someone that is, these are nice to get for a cute small gift but don't be surprised if they aren't something that they wolf down immediately. They do have a nice taste if you are into the extremely thick gummy treats but for me, well, they were just a little too odd to want to eat in mass quantities.
As always, thanks for the visit
