Special K Protein Meal Bar Chocolate Peanut Butter: A Simply Awesome Protein Bar

Written: Apr 29, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Great taste, great price, 10 grams of protein.
Cons:180 calories, not everyone is going to love them.
The Bottom Line: It's chocolate. It's peanut butter. It's actually good for you.

I'm always looking for ways to add some extra protein to my diet; the Special K Protein Meal Bars were off my radar for a while. I never really thought that they would have an acceptable taste to them but when I did give in I felt like kicking myself for not trying them earlier. To me the Chocolate Peanut Butter and Chocolatey Chip are the best tasting of the 'indulgence' bars. There are a lot of good flavors in the series but to me these are the ones that stand out the most and are the most satisfying. The boys didn't like these at first; you do have to give it a minute for the peanut butter to really hit your taste buds. Instead of having a bottom coating of chocolate, this has a whole wrap of it. Like the other bars, it is foil wrapped but that won't do much to protect it from heat in the summer.

Giant Eagle sells all of their Special K Protein Meal Bars for a dollar; if you want to get them by the box then Target is the best place to get them. I was hoping that Wal-Mart would have them but they only have the fruit styled bars. For the price this is a great bar, especially if you want to add some extra protein to your diet. Even though this has the "protein meal bar" wording on the wrapper this is not something that I consider a meal replacement bar because there isn't enough to it to hold you over until your next meal. The soy nuggets on the inside of the bar give it a nice mouthfeel but this isn't something that's super crunchy. If you decide to give these a try you have to give it about thirty seconds to really bloom in your mouth.

This is a good snack if you are craving something sweet; you can't overdo it or the numbers will work against you. The boys like these and I'd rather have these around than candy bars but you can't over do it, moderation is the key with anything like this. It doesn't come off as sweet as a Reece's Peanut Butter Cup because that's packed with peanut butter whereas this has more soy nuggets than anything else. The chocolate coating gives it a great taste but it isn't as smooth as regular milk chocolate. I've never had any repercussions from the soy protein used in the bar but if you are soy sensitive I'd suggest getting one loose bar to try it out before you get them by the box. You can check the expiration date on the bottom of the wrapper or on the box depending on how you are buying them. I've never had any of them that were even close to expiring so I can't say if the taste is different or not. This does have an amazing taste to it but I wish that there was just a little more peanut butter in it.

Each bar is 1.59 ounces, that's considered one serving. Each bar contains 180 calories, 6 grams of fat, 250 milligrams of sodium, 25 grams of carbohydrates and 10 grams of protein. If you can handle the calories and carbohydrates of this it does make for a nice snack but if you get them by the box you might be tempted to have more than one every couple of days. This does contain dairy products so it's not vegan friendly; there's also an allergy warning that it contains soy, peanuts, almonds, wheat and may contain other tree nuts. For the price this is a complete steal for ten grams of protein but if you want to pack even more to it dip it in some peanut butter. This is a little higher in fat than some of the other bars but that's from the peanut butter. If you are looking for something sweet as a snack but don't want to down a candy bar, give this flavor a try.
