How Do You Destroy The Nutritional Value Of A Fruit Snack?

Written: Jan 27 '08 (Updated Jan 27 '08)
Pros:Tasty and fun.
Cons:Too much sugar.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend Yogos Bits as a snack, not for the nutritional value which is specious, but for the flavor and convenience.

The way you completely destroy any nutritional value that you might otherwise find in a fruit snack is to coat it with sugar. Sure, it’s going to be a hit with the kids. But fruit snacks without the extra sugar are usually pretty popular with the kids, too. The only nutritionally redeeming value in Yogos is that they contain 100 percent of the daily recommended value of Vitamin C and 10 percent of the daily recommended value of Calcium. I guess the minimal infusion of vitamins makes this snack a step up from plain old candy.

Flavor
As an adult, I generally like the taste of fruit snacks. I buy them for the kids, but end up eating my fair share. I generally prefer the plain fruit snacks without any fancy gimmicks (Gushers, tape, etc.) The flavor of the Kellogg’s Yogo’s Bits is decent. The fruit flavor is still discernable through the sugary coating. The interior portion of the snack is like a microscopic fruit snack, which provides a little bit of tang to the treat. The sugary outer coating is a bit distracting. Because these snacks are so small, there is a tendency to want to pop them in your mouth by the handful. You can allow the sugary coating to dissolve in your mouth before chewing the fruity center, but that’s no fun. I generally just bit in and let the flavors mingle as I chew.

Portions
A box of Kellogg’s Yogos Bits contains six packs of individually wrapped treats. Each pack weighs 0.8 ounces, for a total weight of 4.8 ounces per box. Each individual pouch is considered a single serving size, so the nutritional values aren’t obscured by mathematical equations. Some products try to hide how much sugar or fat you are consuming by making what appears to be a single serving multiple servings. There are approximately thirty to forty pieces in each pouch.

The Truth About Nutrition
These snacks are touted as yogurt covered snacks, and I have been referring to them as sugar coated snacks. That is because sugar is the main ingredient. The first ingredient overall is sugar, and the first ingredient in the coating is sugar. Palm oil is the second ingredient in the coating. Non-fat Yogurt powder (whatever that is, exactly) doesn’t appear until the fourth ingredient in the list of ingredients for the coating. How they can justifiably call these yogurt covered is beyond me. They are, for all intents and purposes, sugar coated fruit bits. The apple puree is near the bottom of the ingredient list, which is probably why they refer to these are “fruit flavored bits.” The fat calories are fairly low (although they should probably be non-existent in a fruit snack), coming in at 1.5 grams of fat per serving.

Fun to Eat
Okay, so they are fun to eat. Forget about the nutritional value. The flavor is good, not overly sweet considering the excessive amount of sugar they contain. The small beads of juicy flavored goodness come in several flavors other than Berry, Berry Banana. The other flavors include: Watermelon Splash, Island Explosion, Crazy Berries and Strawberry Slam. Kellogg’s also rolled out a website with a few cheesy games and activities, located at kelloggsyogos.com.

Overall Impression
Kellogg’s Yogos are a fun, not-so-nutritious treat. The high sugar content almost makes this more candy than healthy snack, but I am not going to rate this treat based on nutritional value. I will remove one star due to the fact that they are touted as yogurt covered, when the covering barely resembles anything close to yogurt. Therefore, my final recommendation is that Kellogg’s Yogos Bits rates four stars out of a possible five.
