Pros: Fast opening, razor sharp, light weight, and made in the USA.
The Kershaw Whirlwind
It was a rainy November day in the Pacific North West. The second season coastal elk tag in my bill fold. I stand there, soaking wet and steaming, looking at the fresh elk tracks. I must keep moving. I half to close the gap. The smell of rain and old growth timber fill the air. Suddenly another familiar smell, I am very close now. I see movement. Motionless I wait, kaboom, a five point branch bull stepped out fifty yards from me. A clean kill. My heart beating rapidly, breathing deeply, I try to calm my self. When I finally stopped shaking the "click" from my Kershaw Whirlwind tells me its time for the real work to start. Thankfully the Kershaw Whirlwind is razor sharp and will make quick work of this majestic animal.
Made in the United States of America!
Perhaps the best part of purchasing the Kershaw Whirlwind is its made right here in Oregon. It is more and more important to support a local company in a effort to keep jobs in the US. We might have to pay a little more but in the end its worth it knowing your supporting a US company.
I have owned three Kershaw Whirlwind knifes (lost two) and have had no quality issues. The glass-filled nylon handle is, non-slip, ergonomically designed, and most importantly fits good in the hand. The pocket clip is attached with 3 philips screws and is easily removed to cleaning or to bend back into shape if bent. The Sandvic 14C28N stainless steel is fairly easy to sharpen and holds a good edge.
The Kershaw Whirlwind is light weigh at only 3.5 ounces. The Whirwinds weight, combined with its size at only 4 1/2 inches make this knife perfect for carrying. You can hardly tell you have a knife in your pocket. The patented Speed-Safe opening system makes this knife one of fastest one hand openers ever. The system is basically a spring assisted opening mechanism that helps open the knife faster. The edge this knife holds will skin a whole elk and then some without resharpening.
The Blade is 3 1/4 inches long and made from Sandvic 14C28N stainless steel. This is a special proprietary blend made for Kershaw. This steel is capable of accepting a very good edge. But not every one can sharped a knife so don't blame the knife if you can't put a shaving sharp edge on this knife. Knife sharpening is a fine art and many only think they can. If you can't sharpen a knife I recommend sending it back to Kershaw and they will sharpen it for free.
