The Bottom Line: I wouldn't hesitate to go for it!
I've spent the last year sewing on a Viking Designer 1, so when I tell you that this Kenmore 19005 is an absolutely wonderful machine, you know that I'm comparing it to a top of the line quality machine. I was looking for a second machine and perhaps something quieter than my Designer 1, and I've always liked Janome. (Janome is the parent company that makes the high end Kenmore machines.) I thought I'd give this one a try, if I didn't like it, I could return it. I have been wonderfully surprised! First off, this machine is nicely weighted, and sits on my sewing cabinet without sliding, moving or wobbling. I did some quilting, and even sewing many layers of heavy fabric that pull on the machine, it stayed firmly in place. The fabric doesn't slide around while you're sewing either. It sewed through many layers with ease, like a knife cuts through butter. It's ultra smooth running, absolutely purrs, and it's very quiet. I don't have any problems with jamming in the hook or difficulty threading. Winding the bobbin is a breeze and it's a sinch to get it up in position to sew. This machine also has a COLOR screen that's a good size. I think this machine is comparable to the Janome 9000 series, with I don't think has the colored screen. It's very User Friendly, and stitches are easy to select by touching a picture of the desired stitch on the screen. The screen recommends everything from which presser foot to use, to the tension adjustment. There's a great selection of stitches and also some built in embroidery designs as well as more than one style of lettering. Changing from sewing to embroidery is very easy without the need for bulky attachments. You simply screw on the hoop and select a design. You can adjust and customize some embroidery designs right on the screen. Along with the designs "built in" you can buy Kenmore Embroidery Cards, although for some you need a "Reader" which is also available from Sears. The machine reads in .sew format and will also read Janome's design cards. However, if you're a die hard embroidery person you may want a larger screen? It comes with a good "training" DVD that explains how to do all the functions and a good detailed Owner's Manuel. If you're thinking about getting this machine, don't hesitate, it's well worth the money!
