Pros: Exceptionally quiet for bedtime.
Cons: It's so good I haven't had to turn it on high yet.
With the last few weeks of intensive heat, my old Hampton Bay air conditioner was struggling to keep my bedroom warm. It has given me 8 years of great service, but the plastic window expanders were cracking and would have to cover them with a towel to prevent warm air from seeping through. I saw this Kenmore 75251 model on sale at Sears and I asked for a demonstration because I've never had a remote control air conditioner. The salesman was very thorough and asked me what size my bedroom is and I responded 35 feet by 25 with 9 foot ceiling. He told me I would not have a problem with this unit. So I bought one and took it out the box and had the basic same design as my old one except the control box is in the right hand corner. Just a forward note on energy, this unit is not Energy Star Compliant.
This Kenmore 75251 has 3 fan speeds to go with the 4 programs you can work with to keep your room the perfect temperature so when you come home just fall on your bed and soak all that cold air in. As I installed it in my bedroom window I pulled out the new window side flaps and screwed them in the corners of the window. I still had some space maybe a quarter inch cause my place was built in 1894 and nothing is squared in it, thusly I had to plug the gaps with my trusty towels again. I plugged it in and went to the box and put the batteries in the remote (2 AAA batteries). I turned it on low; it was so quiet I didn't know it was running until I stood in front of it. I turned it up on high and such a rush of cold air blasting me and the sound of this unit was not bad at all, remarkably quit compared to my old one. As my second floor is, I have a door that you open to go upstairs; first room is a little library den/personal office and a second bedroom and then the master bedroom.
The remote will let you adjust the thermostat setting so that when it gets to the temperature you want it automatically shuts down, plus you don't have to use it if you want continuous cooling all through the day and night. This room air conditioner has convenient electronic controls and display on the dashboard with thermostat on/off settings. You can even program it to start and hour before you get home with a timer that can delay up to 12 hours. You also have a program for on/off, sleep mode so that in case you want it to turn off after you fall asleep. This Kenmore 75251 has a auto restart just in case of a lightning rain storm and your power goes out.
I turned it on full blast and directed the top windows to blow the air low and I set one to blow to the left and the other to blow air to the right and went downstairs and closed the door. An hour later I opened the door and it instantly hit me in the face like someone putting a cold rag on my face. I thought the 25000 BTU's would be enough for the second floor and I was right. The closer I walked to my bedroom I was freezing so I remote it to low and that setting is all I need to keep the whole second floor cooled. On 90 degree or higher days it will go to medium, but I have no need to turn it up on high. With the direction flaps you can direct the air to go up or down and from left to right. Its cooling watts are 2880 to 2940 and you're going to have to watch what you turn on while you run it. Like I said my house is old and the power you need to run this unit is 208/230 volts. So in the morning I turn it off as I watch tv and drink my coffee as I iron my pants for that day, after the ironing I turn it back on low as I'm heading out the door, if I don't do this it will kick my breaker for that room. The dimensions for this unit are 26 inches in width, 28.41 in depth, and in height 17.69 inches. This machine weighs 42 pounds so if you can't handle holding it as you install it please have help. The front plate is mainly all plastic as to the back everything is sheet metal to steel. Make sure you have at least a 3 % tilt so all the excess water drips out the back of the machine. I will suggest one inch wood screws to hold the side flaps in position. This machine comes with a one year warranty; I bought an extension warranty to last another year. This is a easy sleep air conditioning unit that when on low it doesn't bother me.
