Pros: No more bags. Has attachments similar to a canister. Does all types of surfaces.
Cons: Funky purple color [grape]. I miss the self retracting cord of my old canister.
The Bottom Line: If you have time, go to Sears and try them. I think older made-in-USA machines were allowed more powerful motors, but this one does a good job.

| memphodyte's Full Review: Kenmore 36933 Bagless Upright Vacuum |
Moved into a bigger place and my 20 year old Eureka was down on power as the beater bar was slow. It was time for something new. Have had canisters before as the attachments do come in handy for all sorts of cleaning. However a good upright will do the bulk of the work and was tired of dragging a canister around. The current crop of uprights are now cross-overs as they now have hoses w/ attachments.
Off to the big "G" search engine, I asked about variants of 'best vacuums'. It was 5pm, my 22-year old Eureka vacuum was shot and @ the old house.
I was prepping my hardwood floors for refinish.
I asked friends and nobody was enthusiastic about recommending a particular vacuum:
Kenmore was top-rated by Consumer magazine that tested more than 35 vacuum cleaners, including upright and canister models.
Another one rated it better than Dyson
The kicker was I am like 3 blocks from Sears @ rush hour.
Got the #3 rated bagless version as opposed to the #1 bagger. Both are HEPA filtered, so less dust than my old canister too. This Kenmore has multiple settings to control the beater speed and "intelliclean" will speed up and slow down the beater and vacuum motor as it senses dirt intake. You can override this if you like. It does not seem to pull in dirt from the sides as well some others I have used before. Perhaps this is a compromise of the design as this one attempts to do it all. The dirt collector is easy to use and I prefer it to removing/replacing the bags of the old canister. The salesperson says some prefer bags as they may not be exposed to as much dust in the process of emptying the dirt. In my case, the old bags were becoming hard to find. This has a gizmo that rattles dirt from the filter to get more life from it. The beater is direct drive so no more belt to slip/replace.
Has settings for using attachments by hose like a canister, carpets and hard floors. I have had both hardwood and carpeted floors and it does a good job in either case. I would not say it does better than machines that are dedicated to carpets or hard floors, but as it attempts to do it all, I was satisfied with it's ability to clean. There are many brands that compete with this one but I needed a new machine now. Without driving all over town, this top rated vacuum was 5 min away. Sears had a good selection of machines and I was able to compare them and even operate them if I wanted.
