| komondor's Full Review: Kenmore 42800 Stainless Steel Electric Cooktop |
If you are not familiar with Induction cooking it is very popular in Europe and I have been told the Sears unit is made by Electrolux. The unit I received was made in Canada.
Induction cooking requires steel pots and pans. If a magnet will stick to the bottom of the pot it will work. Pots that are also made with Aluminum and have multiple plies will work best.
You can take a towel and lay it down on the cooktop then add a pan and it works fine catches spills easily.
The touch controls can be a bit tricky as there is no feedback when you put your finger on the controls until it turns on. The other thing that is mentioned many times is that there are 2 power units and you can't run the 2 burners on the right or left at 100% at the same time. You can run all the burners at 85% with no problems so for most people it is really not an issue. You need to make sure the pots and pans also are the correct size too big it won't heat the outer edge and too small it may not even work as the cooktop has to sense the pot before it will turn on.
Cooking is where the cooktop really shines. boiling water is much faster. Using the free pan that comes with the cooktop it took 2 1/2 minutes to boil 18 oz of water with the new Cooktop 30 seconds. I also simmered a pot roast for 4 hrs and it worked great with no hot spots or sticking.
There are 2 downsides to the cooktop that I feel are worth mentioning. The surface is bright and shiny it is difficult to get it clean and streak free.
The old cooktop I had was 30 AMP and the new cooktop was 40 this required new wiring and a new breaker at the main panel. So before you buy the cooktop check this. Also check the measurements carefully I had to cut my granite tile counter top down about 1/2 in order to have the cooktop fit.
