Pros: excellent suction, solid feel, well designed
Cons: high, wide front prevents it from getting under pieces of furniture, light not very bright
The Bottom Line: Excellent suction, better than brands costing more. No belts to replace. Direct drive for easy maneuverability. Sears allows a 30-day trial period, but I won't be returning this vacuum.

| gillyala's Full Review: Kenmore 31912 Progressive Bagged Upright Vacuum |
I was so disgusted with my Miele S175i upright and its terrible suction I donated it to a charity. After doing some research and comparing the suction power of over 20 vacuums I bought the Kenmore Progressive. I couldn't be happier.
Suction Power: The suction through the attachment hose of the vacuums I tested (Hoover, Dyson, Eureka)was anemic compared to this Kenmore, which impressively latched on to my palm. On my hardwood floors, I watched it pull in fuzz from at least 3 inches away and created such suction it was like a squeegee. It was the only vacuum with rubber inserts in the wheels to cushion the wood.
Ease of use:even with a 15" wide head, the 'direct drive' makes it very maneuverable on high pile carpets. The lower the pile, the more the 'pull' of the direct drive so that it almost feels like a self-propelled unit. The tools (crevice tool, dusting brush, combination brush, telescoping wand) are easy to snap in and out of the unit. The attachment hose is short, but the shorter the hose, the better the suction. It came with an extension hose and a mini-beater brush called a "Handi-Mate" that still produced impressive pick-up power. The main beater bar has little brushes at the edges that do a good job of getting closer to the carpet edge than other vacuums I've had.
Other features: the bag and filters are accessible and easily changed and are less expensive than other brands. The 30' cord is a plus. This vacuum is beltless. No more burning rubber smell and one less part to replace.I really didn't pay too much attention to the 'performance indicator' and dirt sensor lights, as I was just so thrilled with its cleaning performance over the Miele.
I paid $250 for it and while not as cheap as the Hoover Windtunnel or Eureka Boss Smart, it was worth the extra cost, and compared to the Dyson and the Miele, it was a bargain!
