Pros: Digital timer. Energy efficient.
Cons: Frequently becomes unbalanced. Pump quit suddenly. Clothes in mesh bag not clean enough.
The Bottom Line: I would not buy this washer again. I'm disappointed that a reputable company like Sears would sell such an inferior product.

| mary_perren's Full Review: Kenmore 22062 / 22064 / 22066 Top Load Washer |
My two-year-old Calypso washer left me high and dry this weekend with four loads of laundry to wash! I had a load in the washer when the pump suddenly went out on the machine. The water would not drain, the liquid fabric softener would not dispense and it made a loud humming sound. The machine stubbornly gave me an error message that I was unable to clear (I don't have an owner's manual -- I bought the machine new at a Sears outlet store). I wound up wringing the clothes out by hand and hanging them to drip dry. I called a same-day appliance repair service on Monday morning (not Sears), and the technician was at my house within an hour. He took one look at the machine and told me he didn't have a clue how to fix it. At that point I called Sears, and was told a repairman would be at my house the next morning between 8 and 12 (he did call first).
My mother dealt with the repairman (I was at work), and says the repair was an all-day process. He did not have a pump on his truck. Initially, he told her he would have to order a part and return the next day, but he ended up tracking one down from another technician and coming back the same day to fix it. By the repairman's own admission, Sears technicians had serviced several Calypso washers with pump problems in the Nashville, Tennessee area in the past week. He did give us a mesh bag to use for delicates (I already have one, but thanks anyway), and told us to be sure to use it for underwire bras, as they can catch in the washer's mechanism. I use the bag for all of my delicates, but I notice that they are not as clean as my other clothes. That leaves me little alternative but to hand wash them, which I don't particularly enjoy!
We have used the Calypso since December of 2003. This was the first time it had been serviced. However, it frequently went out of balance, regardless of load size, wash cycle or the weight of the clothes (it was as prone to become unbalanced when washing towels as it was delicates). Because of this, the washer had to be tended to constantly (no throwing clothes in before going to work), which was a hassle. I started using the "bulky" cycle for almost everything in hopes that it would fix the balance problem, but it did not.
Since experiencing a problem with the machine (which was out of warranty), I have learned that a class-action lawsuit has been filed against Sears over the Calypso's many defects. I have also read numerous consumer horror stories about this machine all over the Internet. Fortunately, my problems pale in comparison to many of those that have been reported. Still, I am a very unhappy Calypso owner who plans to replace the machine with a more traditional model as soon as it's financially feasible.
