Don’t let the name fool you – Kenra Straightening Serum is amazing product for curlyheads who want to stay curly!
If you’ve been blessed (or cursed) with curly hair, you may be familiar with the search for the Holy Grail – the product that will give you shiny, separated curls instead of a huge fuzzy mass of individual hairs. If you’ve found it, congratulations. If not, you owe it to yourself to try Kenra Straightening Serum.
Kenra Straightening Serum is not a styling lotion or gel. It actually does not claim to provide any “hold” at all. So, for curlies who want their curls to be soft and loose with absolutely no stiffness, it can be used alone. If you need more hold, the Straightening Serum should be layered under a styling product (I’ve had excellent results with other Kenra products such as Styling Lotion or Capture Glaze).
Straightening Serum comes in a handy pump bottle. It is a creamy purple-tinged liquid that feels very slippery in your hands and hair while wet. I think this makes it easier to apply, as it’s obvious when you’ve missed a spot. There is a faint “salon” odor, but this disappears as your hair dries.
I use 2 or 3 pumps on my shoulder-length curls. The best way to apply any hair product is to divide your hair into sections first; this makes it easier to coat each strand. After finger-combing the Straightening Serum through my hair, I apply Styling Lotion or Capture Glaze, then bend over at the waist and shake for a few seconds to encourage curls. I then let my hair air-dry. The result is wonderful curls – nicely separated and completely frizz-free (weather permitting).
I have not used the Straightening Serum to straighten my hair. I do not believe it would provide enough hold on its own, though it would help make the end result soft, shiny, and frizz-free.
Like many straightening or defrizzing products (such as the John Frieda Frizz Ease line), Kenra Straightening Serum contains silicones. For some of us, silicones are the best thing since penicillin. If you find silicone products somewhat helpful but don’t like the gummy feeling they can leave, give the Kenra product a try. I used to be a faithful Citre Shine user, but I prefer the cleaner feeling I get with Kenra. For some reason, some curly hair (and presumably some straight hair, but I wouldn’t know!) just doesn’t react well to silicones. If you’ve had bad luck with products like Frizz Ease, Citre Shine, or anything that contains “cones” such as dimethicone, Straightening Serum may not be a good choice for you. Instead, try a protein-based product such as Sebastian Potion 9.
