Pros: sound quality, audio adjustments, 4.5 volt preamp outputs, no skipping, MP3 playback
Cons: the display fades in bright sunlight, some buttons could be a bit larger
The Bottom Line: The bottom line is the KDC-X659 is a great looking receiver with the sound to match. Anyone wanting to build a dream system should definitely consider this deck.

This unit's appearance is really cool, especially at night.
The sound is even better. Most of my friends are Alpine buffs. They told me to go with Alpine over Kenwood eXcelon, biggest mistake I ever made. The v-drive amplifier had more power, but the cda-7873 receiver had either all bass or all treble. This receiver, however, has greater depth of the sound and better dynamics. I like being able to adjust all of the sound controls from the receiver. The one that I think helps the receiver more than anything is the ability to boost the mids and/or presence. I hope to be able to add an amp to power my speakers soon. I can just imagine how my system would sound then and what kind of system you could build with this receiver. The power is very clean, which I believe, is the main reason why the deck sounds so natural. The sound staging of this unit is great as well. You could have natural sound or all the crazy bass you could ever hope to have with this unit. I had to keep the gain on my amplifier nearly down to the lowest setting. This is a good thing though. The lower the gain the cleaner sounding the amp can be. Kenwood eXcelon receivers, I believe, would make great competition decks.
