All tricycles are not the same. Some prefer the classic little red trike, while others go for the aggressive styling and plastic construction of the Big Wheel, or the latest Disney- or Barbie-branded offering. But what if you want something cute, sturdy, innovative, and versatile
and maybe even a tad bit safer than the average trike? Then turn to Kettler, a German company with a reputation for building, among other things, ride-on toys that are built to last. The Kalypso is no exception.
So, whats so great about the Kalypso?
Its cute and colorful without being over-the-top. The Kalypso is a girlie offering among Kettler trikes. Its teal, purple, and yellow colors will appeal to girls without disturbing boys who may be lower on the hand-me-down food chain.
Its sturdy. Other than the molded plastic seat, it is constructed of metal. Kettler tricycles are known for lasting years and years. Weve had ours for almost two years of hard use, and theres no sign of a squeak or rattle, fading, or rust.
Its innovative. My favorite feature is the push bar, which is optional on other Kettler trikes but standard on the Kalypso. This easily removable, long metal handle allows you to push your little biker. This is an amazingly handy feature for children who get tired before you get home, or for times when you want to use it in lieu of a stroller. Another feature is the optional seatbelt. Thats right, a seatbelt for a tricycle. If youre not a paranoid parent, you can laugh now. But I know some of you are out there, and I know youre making a mental note to add this.
Its versatile. The Kalypsos low profile makes it a good choice for younger kids. Its adjustable seat allows you to fit it to older kids. My daughter could reach the pedals when she was 2 years old, long before she could reach the pedals on other tricycles. And now that shes 4 years old and 41 inches tall, were ready to move the seat back so she can use it another year. The Kalypso can be customized by adding a basket, bell, or flag available from Kettler.
Its safe. Yeah, I know tricycles are not traditionally considered dangerous. But I love the fact that my daughters Kalypso sits closer to the ground than a traditional tricycle, but isnt a bottom-scraper like the Big Wheel. I love the high-backed seat that she sits in, rather than perches on. And theres that seatbelt. The design gives her a good view of the road but a lower center of gravity, helping to reduce spills.
The Kalypso is more expensive than some other tricycles, but its adjustable seat allows it to be used longer, and the push handle allows it to be used in situations where one might not normally take a tricycle. So when you break it down into cost per use, its a great deal. And of course there is the hand-me-down or resale potential to offset the cost. But it will be a sad day when my daughter outgrows her cute, colorful Kalypso.
