Bang For The Buck
Pros:Constantly hilarious, incredibly violent but with heart, near perfect mix of action/comedy
Cons:...Honestly, I have nothing bad to say about this
The Bottom Line:
The most fun I've had in a long time and probably the best film I've seen since Bad Lieutenant Port of Call New Orleans. We need more movies like this.
Ever since I saw the first trailers to Kick-A ss, I knew it was a movie I wanted to see in theatres. Some trailers just have that effect on you, and while this does lead to huge disappointments sometimes, this time was not one of those times. In fact, it exceeded what I thought it was going to be. When a movie can give you an accurate depiction of itself and still constantly surprise you, that movie is doing something right. Comic book movies have been popular for most of the decade, and while a lot have been terrible, and some have been great, Kick- A ss is easily the first great comic book movie of the new decade.

Dave Lizewski is an average teenager. Nothing special about him, full of hormones, he’s awkward around girls, reads comics, and hangs out with his two friends, Marty and Todd. But Dave is tired of being unnoticed, not doing the things he desires, talking to his dream girl Katie. Dave wants change, so he dawns a wetsuit, and decides to fight crime with the name Kick A ss, after all, this is the real world, and no one has actually tried to be a superhero. At first, Dave fails, and is hospitalized. He keeps at it, and runs into other vigilantes, Hit-girl and Big Daddy. They are trying to take down mob boss Frank. Dave keeps fighting crime and things go great for him, he gets the girl, and now doesn’t want to keep fighting crime (not that he was particularly good at it). But Frank thinks he is behind the burning of his headquarters and wants revenge.
Kick A ss is very well plotted. The scenes never run too long in length and always accomplish a lot. And the balancing of the plotlines is impressive. Considering the fact that this movie is just as much Hit-girl’s and Big Daddy’s as it is Dave’s. The comedy in this film is easily as sharp as any good comedy, (it probably had just as many laughs as Hot Tub Time Machine) and there were an impressive amount of catchy one-liners and solid comedy beats in general. Some of it could have came from the source material, but I haven’t read it, and am just going off the movie. The laughs are constant, and between the comedy and the action, there is never a dull moment. It moves quickly, and I was surprised to learn this movie has a two hour running time, it felt like ninety minutes at most.
But there is much more to Kick-A ss than comedy, and it succeeds at its story just as much as it does with humor. The story is great, and so unbelievably simple, I can’t believe the comic was the first time it was ever done. The basic premise of regular guys becoming superheroes is strong, and it is played somewhat realistically. Of course, they’re not really superheroes, more like really good vigilantes, but it works all the same, and the costumes are certainly superheroesque. One thing this film achieved well, was its heart. There was a lot of good honest emotion being put on screen. And the writing and acting delivered on both fronts. This was a smart choice because, we obviously care about our characters more, and it justifies the insane amount of violence.
What? It’s violent you say? And how. This is an action movie just as much as it is a comedy and most of it is very over the top, or at least all the scenes with Hit-girl. It is also impressively shot and quick cuts are effectively utilized. The level of action ranges from insanely over the top, to moderately realistic. The scenes with Hit-girl fighting are zany and a blast to watch, (especially her first real entrance) and are always awesome. The realism of the movie works well, even if not everything is completely realistic. As seen in my title, a guy literally gets exploded inside a microwave so they’re not too concerned about taking it too far. And as a viewer and lover of films, I was just fine with that the entire time. Every time action occurred, whether they were going for comedy, action, or emotion, it was always executed top notch, and they really nailed it.
Kick- A ss used a good mix of unknown actors and well established ones. Aaron Johnson gets his first big starring role here, and does a great job. He plays a teen and just about everyone can relate to him in some areas. I look forward to seeing more work from him in the future. Chloe Moretz gives one of the best child performances I’ve seen in years, for her work as Hit-girl. Her emotional scenes were very impressive and she was clearly enjoying her time in this role, and she stole the scene every time. I’m guessing she is going to have a long successful career in Hollywood. Nicholas Cage shows up here as Big Daddy and he does a great job. Following up Bad Lieutenant Port of Call New Orleans (another movie everyone needs to see) he gets to do more crazy things with his role, although he also has a nice emotional arc to him, and is played very well. Mark Strong (looking like Stanley Tucci)plays the bad guy, and does a great job. He is not too over the top and remains some humanism to his role, and is menacing, making him an effective antagonist. The rest of the cast is great, featuring, Clark Duke, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and if you were a fan of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, you’ll be pleased to find Dexter Fletcher and Jason Flemyng.
I really have nothing bad to say about Kick- A ss. Sure, there are a few moments of predictability but nothing too bad. It was a lot of fun, had great action, and lots of laughs, as well as a lot of heart, and strong emotion. It’s not too concerned about being realistic, although some of it is. There are tons of references to other comic books, TV shows, and movies, and one of my favorite jokes was a Spirit 3 marquee at the movies, (hell, I’d see it). The pop culture references may date it slightly, but I doubt it would affect the movie. This was a blast and I fully recommend it to everyone, I would see it again, but I don’t have the money. For a 28 million dollar movie, this looks as impressive as most 100 million dollar ones. And the money had to be raised independently as no studio would fund it, due to it being too edgy. And it is, I can’t even say the title in my review without having to censor it, (you should fix that epinions) even with lots of violence and action, it would never work in the same way if it didn’t have the heart and emotion it carries. So, while Avatar may still be playing and the remade Death at a Funeral opened, I doubt you will have as good of a time at those. This was a great film and will probably be in my top five of the year. So see it in theatres while it’s still playing, hopefully Iron Man 2 won’t kill this movie. I honestly can't recommend this movie enough.

Chloe Moretz – Hit-Girl/ Mindy Macready
Nicholas Cage – Big Daddy/ Damon Macready
