metallman56's Full Review: Kicker Solo-Baric L7 S12L7 (2001) Car Subwoofer
Crutchfield has these subs reviewed very high. So I go into Circuit City to give them a listen, and I don't think there all that great. In fact I don't think they sound very good at all. The bass isn't very crisp, in fact it can get pretty sloppy. Not at all what a 5 star rating should be.
One of my buddy's has one, and is always talking about how loud they are. Let me also include he has never been into a private audio shop, just Circuit City and Best Buy. He really likes his L7s and swears there's nothing better. So I finally had heard enough of it and took him out to listen to what a woofer is suppose to sound like. I have 2 Boston G5's. After we were done listening, he said that his woofers may be a little louder, but they defiantly didn't sound that good.
I think the square design is what gets people to buy these. Kicker says you get more cone area with the square. True, but the square is also less efficient. Something they fail to mention. Personally I think that if the square woofer was as good as Kicker claims, then home audio companies like B&W and M&K would now have square woofers. They don't. Kicker is pretty much the only brand, home or car audio, that has the squares. Why? Cause there something different and they sell.
So needless to say this isn't my favorite woofer. If you want something to just pound cause you think that's cool, this woofer might be more for you. But for the money you can do better.
The patented square-woofer technology allows for 18% more cone, which translates to more bang for your buck compared to competing round subwoofers.More at eCOST.com
