L7 vs two JL Audio w3v3's

Pros: Louder than JL Audio's. Looks nice.

Cons: the L7 has a real worth of about $250 tops. dont pay anymore than that.

The Bottom Line: This is a great sub from beginner to upgrade.

Since JL Audio is also very popular, i thought i'd give my side by side comparison. I currently use two JL Audio W3v3 12's in sealed enclosure. Their 4 ohm subs drawing 2 ohm load on a RF 600.1bd amp. I wanted to save some space and have a single 2 ohm sub but the JL's just arent all that loud, they are clear and can accuratly produce fast bass notes but i wanted something different. So i decided on the Kicker L7 12.

The L7 came in a typical cardboard box encased in styrafoam, unlike my W3v3's which was encased in a cardboard wrap. It includes two Kicker stickers and a manual, thats it. The newest L7 is a bit heavier than the W3v3 and the motor/basket assembly looks very aggressive and sturdy with thick aluminum. My W3v3 is standard oldschool basket and magnet design, not much to look at. The cones on both are very stiff but the L7 has a much stiffer suspension and no idea if thats a good thing or not.

I installed the L7 in a 1.25 ft.3 Q-Logic sealed box. Stuffed it with poly-fill. Q-Logic boxes are impossible to get sealed 100% air tight so i had to use truck bed  liner to coat the whole interior. The sub still leaked around the Lip of the sub when i pressed the woofer down...oh well, Q-Logic sucks anyway.

The amp puts out 653 watts at a 2 ohm load. Both JL subs were wired parallel to draw 2 ohms and the single L7 will pull this amount as well.
The L7 was almost as loud as both JL subs. Not bad considering 21 inches of effective cone area vs 13. The L7 isnt as punchy with hard hitting notes but seems more effective with vibration of the deep notes. Its definitly alot louder than a single W3v3 and its not even broke in yet. Accuracy is hard for me to judge but to me it seems just as accurate but many audiophiles shun any woofer shape other than round.

Most reviewers get blinded when they buy a new subwoofer and its natural for them to want to think their sub is the best. Some exaggerate and some just dont know better while a few will simply believe its the best no matter what simply cause they spent alot of $$ for it.


There are plenty of round subs that are just as loud, its impossible to say one is better than another cause there is no best. Its soley dependant on the following:
your tastes
enclosure design
vehicle accoustics
amplifier's actual power output.
and general system install. ( good wires, signal processors..etc)
